Cobber Heroics Hand Hurst Another Megastar

By Simon Orchard
Good Odds Cobber has delivered a second Ladbrokes Dapto Megastar (LMDC) title to Frank and Tracy Hurst after a star performance on the NSW South Coast overnight.

The son of Fernando Bale x Good Odds Meghan had to overcome a Box 8 draw and a quality field to claim the $75,000 prize, but after beginning well and slicing his way onto the rail through the first bend, the result never looked it doubt.

The reigning New Sensation and Gosford Gold champion soon passing early leader Harmony Fire in the back straight before opening up an insurmountable lead and careering away for a comfortable 4.5 length win in a time of 29.44.

“I knew he was up there, watching his bum…there was a lot of bums behind him you know,” Hurst said post-race.

“But when they go around there [through the catching pen] and you couldn’t see him. Next thing you see the eight rug and when he found the front, shut the gate.”

Good Odds Cobber beating home Harmony Fire (4.75 lengths) and Overflow Jill (5.25 lengths) for his maiden Group 1 title, with all three dogs qualifying for the semi-finals of the LMDC on October 12 at Wentworth Park.

Cobber’ improving his record to 25 wins from 43 starts, with his career earnings now sitting at $381,885.

His latest feat coming five years after current kennelmate, Good Odds Harada, took out the Megastar final for the Hurst team, and two years after his half-sister, Good Odds Emma, also claimed the race.

“[Those three wins] means we’ve got a very, very good breed,” Hurst remarked.

“It means they get well taken care of because they stand up and they race good and they keep racing…Good Odds Cobber is going to the Million Dollar Chase, he’s already got his ticket.”

The victory saw Good Odds Cobber firm from $21 to a $10 third favourite with Ladbrokes for the Million Dollar Chase.

The series now moves to Richmond on Friday night for the running of their regional final, before Broken Hill takes centre stage on Sunday.
