Number One For Mum

By Jeff Collerson
Joe Sciberras is quietly confident he can land his biggest race as an owner after 50 years in the sport when All On Mum exits box one in Friday's Ladbrokes Cannonball final at Richmond.

In last week's heats All On Mum drew box seven and zipped over the 401m trip in 22.52, fastest of the four heats.

All On Mum is one of three finalists trained by Jason Magri, who also won heats with Zip Out Zipper in 22.67 and Canya Captivate in 22.71, the second and third quickest qualifying times.

"From box one I think All On Mum is capable of breaking the track record,'' owner-breeder Joe Sciberras said.

"It would be really special for me if she could win because I named her after my mother Georgia, who died when she was only 49 after battling cancer.

"I've had three big race finalists without winning one.

"Rachel's Revenge, the dam of All On Mum, was a finalist in a Young Star Classic at Wentworth Park, while All On Amy made the finals of the Paws Of Thunder and Christmas Gift."

"I'm 72 now and concentrating on the breeding side of the sport, handing my best race dogs from each litter over to Jason Magri, who is such a great trainer.

"Until I retired I owned a heavy vehicle driving school and I'm an accredited heavy vehicle driving assessor.''

Hardest for Joe Sciberras' greyhound to beat could be the Pat Parrelli-trained Best Ever, who made the early pace before being run down and beaten two-and-a-half lengths by All On Mum in his heat.

Best Ever had box three last week and his finishing time of 22.71 matched the figures recorded by Jason Magri's Canya Captivate.

Best Ever has box eight in the final and boasts an imposing record from outside draws.

In five outings from boxes seven and eight Best Ever has notched three wins and two placings.

Best Ever

"My father Rocco won a Cannonball with a dog called Proud Flame many years ago and I give Best Ever a good chance,'' Parrelli said.

"I was rapt in his heat run because he had not previously seen the track, I only decided to throw him into the race at the last minute.

"Although Best Ever tends to go left when the boxes open, I'm happy with box eight because I believe the dogs drawn in six and seven might give him a good cart across.

"Best Ever had a setback and was sidelined for six months between October and April so has done a wonderful job to be back contesting a major final.''

Like All On Amy's owner Joe Sciberras, Pat Parrelli has a long history in the sport.

"I'm 77 and have held a trainer's licence since 1970,'' Parrelli said.

"Before I started out as a trainer I used to help the late Hec Watt, trainer of the mighty Zoom Top.''

Parrelli actually named the all-time great Zoom Top, a daughter of Black Top and Busy Beaver.

"I was doing Hec Watt's lawns on a ride-on mower and it had a BP Zoom petrol sticker on it,'' Parrelli recalled.

"Hec told me he was after a catchy name for a very exciting fawn bitch puppy he was training and because she was by Black Top I suggested Zoom Top.

"Of course, the rest is history!"
