Power Shows The Power At Wenty

Boom youngster Power And Glory lived up to his lofty reputation with a seven lengths all-the-way winning romp at Wentworth Park on Saturday night.

Trained by Ken Burnett for Sydney businessman Jeff Eastburn, Power And Glory reeled off scorching second and third splits of 13.67 and 17.72 en route to his 29.58 time for the 520m.

Power And Glory led by 10 to 12 lengths in the middle stages but shortened stride slightly in the straight for an easy win, running home in the fair time of 11.86.

After the race trainer Ken Burnett said: "I wasn't surprised he got a  bit tired because that was the dog's first 520m run for three months.

"I will now bring him back to Wentworth Park for a Thursday night meeting in order to maximise his fifth grade appearances.

"Vince Murray bred Power And Glory from his bitch Kwong Magic and asked me to rear her litter to Hooked On Scotch, whelped in late December, 2021.

"Jeff Eastburn had not raced a greyhound with me previously but after he bought Power And Glory for $4000 I finished up training the dog.

"Jeff has been offered mammoth amounts of money for Power And Glory but assures me he won't be selling, he says he is not in this for the money but is in it for the ride.''

Surprisingly the 29.58 posted by Power And Glory, a $1.25 favourite, was equalled later in the night by Lady Wilson, a $26 outsider.

Trained by Sam Sultana, Lady Wilson had veered hard left at the start from box five and collided, losing all chance, when fifth at WP on July 6.

But on Saturday night she began so quickly from box six she was able to cross sharply to the rails and hold the lead, defeating the Minnie Finn-trained Might Have Been by just over a length.

Finn had been chasing a winning treble after taking out earlier races with Both Bowers Ace and Poco Rico, members of her fabulously successful Flying Ricciardo-Poco Dorado litter whelped in February, 2022.

Both Bowers Ace grabbed the lead on the back straight to win by five lengths in 29.72 while Poco Rico trailed Hooked On Fame to the home bend before scoring by a half length from Leg Speed in 29.80.

Both Bowers Ace and Poco Rico have each won 13 races, with Finn pointing out that the former had trialled brilliantly at Richmond on Monday.

"I trialled him over 320m with my National Futurity winner Gets Late Early and he beat her, clocking very fast time of 18.10.''

Trainer Mick Hardman gave credit to his 13-year-old son Tyrone after Zipping Whiskey, who turns four in November, came from a distant third at the half-way mark to win Saturday's 720m race by three lengths in a slick 42.19.

Hardman explained: "Until recently the dog was being trained in Melbourne and when he came back to owner Marty Hallinan's property Marty asked me if I was interested in taking the dog on again, as he had once been in my kennels.

"Tyrone has a soft spot for Zipping Whiskey and said 'Dad, take him, I will help you train him' so under those circumstances I could hardly say no.

"Before last night's race I trialled Zipping Whiskey at Dapto and he went as well as he did when he was a youngster so I knew he would go well tonight providing he got a clear run, as he gets back in the field in his races.''
