Jack Primed For Middle Distance Assault

By Jeff Collerson
Kangaroo Jack, who clocked a near record 35.41 winning over 622m at Richmond last week, will revert to middle distances after Thursday night's 520m assignment at Wentworth Park.

Kangaroo Jack jumped in front and wasn't headed in his Richmond win and trainer Syd Swain has an ambitious middle distance campaign planned.

"I wasn't surprised he went so fast at Richmond because while he has run 29.56 at WP he will run 29.40 there if ever he jumps in front,'' Swain said.

"But while I have no plans to make him into a stayer, I am setting him for middle distance group races like the Hume Cup, over 600m at The Meadows in November, and the 650m Sale Cup in December.

"Before that though he will be off to Grafton for the 660m Stayers Cup on July 17 at their big carnival meeting.''

Greyhound racing does not have many more enthusiastic owners than Sam Mayer, whose company Mayers Fine Food imports over 2000 prodcts, from truffles, cheese, pasta, salmon and mineral water to coffee, cakes, butter and salt.

Mayer's latest winner is CABAO JASPER, who completed a hat-trick with a strong finishing first-up Wentworth Park win last Friday in a slick 29.77.

Trained by Caitlyn Brewer, the former Victorian dog CABAO JASPER won on debut for his new connections in 30.03 at Dapto on June 13 before scoring in identical time there a week later.

Equally promising is the winner's kennelmate PHELAN TUBMAN, another former Victorian, who made the pace until hitting the running rail on the back straight and finishing fourth, four lengths behind CABAO JASPER.

Ricky Brewer, whose wife Caitlyn trains the duo, said: "PHELAN TUBMAN had trialled a bit quicker than Cabao Tubman at Wentworth Park but the dog which won had only had a post-to-post slip.

"We had been toying with the idea of putting these two in the Vic Peters and Peter Mosman heats last Saturday but decided to give them more time.

"PHELAN TUBMAN is a good railer with early speed while Cabao Tubman is a wide runner who will be suited over a middle distance.''

Sam Mayer, the greyhounds' owner, is the son of Fred Mayer, who, after  coming to Australia in 1950 as a European migrant displaced by WWII, was surprised to discover a lack of of fine food varieties.

"He eventually established Mayers Fine Food in 1957 and the business has been growing ever since,'' Sam Mayer said.

"I got into greyhound racing three years ago and now own more than 20, including puppies.

"A friend spotted CABAO JASPER and PHELAN TUBMAN when they were racing Melbourne and recommended I buy them.

"But the best greyhound I have owned is Boaz, who is also trained by Caitlyn and Ricky, because apart from all the races he has won for us, that dog has the most wonderful nature.''

Boaz, who has won 28 races, was successful at his first start, at Bathurst, nearly four years ago, and in the past month the veteran sprinter has score two wins and a second at Dapto and Goulburn.
