Puppy Auction: ‘I Won't Be Taking 20 Pups Home'

By Clinton Payne - Greyhound Recorder
Grafton publican Scott Braund is the man behind the biggest draft in the inaugural GRNSW Puppy Auction at Richmond on Sunday.

Braund will travel down the Pacific Highway this weekend with 20 pups from five different litters.

The owner/breeder is a believer in the puppy auction concept and this year he's switched his allegiance from Queensland to his home state of NSW.

"We've been up to Ipswich for the past three or four auctions and it's slowly deteriorated so when announced they are having one in our home state, I thought that's perfect, we'll give it a crack," Braund said.

Braund and partner Amanda moved from the pub onto a property around four years ago and that move was the catalyst to them upping their stake in the Greyhound racing industry.

"Moving to the property has allowed us to do more in the sport than we were before," he said. "We've got about eight broods on the property."

Braund's 20 lots in the auction are by Bernado, Feral Franky, Aston Rupee and Houdini Boy and the vendor says he won't be taking the lot of them home.

"We are definitely going down there to sell them," he said.

"Sure, there's a few in the draft that we'd like to keep but we are sellers and if the pups bring what we want for them, they'll be going to new homes.

"If the money's right, they are all for sale.

"I can promise you, I won't be taking 20 pups home."

So of the 20 puppies, which are the breeder's picks?

"My favourites among our draft are the Feral FrankyPrincess Zesta's, the Aston Rupee – Minter Fly's and the BernardoMy Kinloch's," he said.

"The Princess Zesta's are really nice pups, the Minter Fly's should get over a bit of ground and we want dogs that get over a trip and then the My Kinloch's are sure to be popular given that she's the dam of Go Bears among others."

The Puppy Classic, at a venue yet to be announced, will have a winner's cheque of $150,000 as an added lure.
