Hayley Will Keep The Legacy Going

By Jeff Collerson
When JODIE and Andy Lord eventually decide to retire the champion trainers will leave a wonderful greyhound racing legacy in the safe hands of their 32-year-old daughter Hayley Moffitt.

Moffitt, who helps handle her parents' large team at Wentworth Park almost every Friday and Saturday night, is now a successful trainer in her own right.

From The East, a brindle bitch she bought for only $5,000 from Western Australia, has won each of her past four starts for Moffitt, all in the best time of the meeting.

"She picked From The East out herself from an advertisement on the internet, so she is not a bad judge,'' proud father Andy Lord said.

"When she bought From The East, the greyhound had won just one from 11 starts but under Hayley's training she has had nine races for eight wins.''

From The East and Sinaloa Girl, who has won three of just nine starts, are the only greyhounds Moffitt is training herself.

No wonder, as her work commitments assisting mum and dad leave little room for her own team, let alone relaxation.

"I work seven days a week on the family property at Gunning,'' Moffitt said.

"Each day begins at 5.30am and if I'm lucky I finish at 8.30pm.

"But things change when dad and mum have dogs racing at Wentworth Park because by the time I get home and see to all the dogs I rarely get to bed before 2.30am.

"My duties also include helping our brood bitches whelp their puppies.

"Today (Wednesday May 1) a bitch a client owns, caIled Where's Bonbon, began whelping a litter and that dragged on until late morning.

"Then Just Terms, who was a top-class stayer, is due to have puppies in five days, so that will start all over again.

"It's all very structured here so there is never a time when I can grab a nap in the middle of the day.

"But I wouldn't swap this life for anything else in the world.

"It can be exhausting but I love every minute of it, and eventually I hope to take over this great greyhound racing and breeding set-up mum and dad have established.''

And while bargain buy From The East's eight wins have been over distances ranging from 297m at Dapto to 440m at Goulburn, Andy Lord is confident his daughter's bitch will run 520m.

"In the first 440m trial Haylay gave From The East at Goulburn she clocked a very smart 24.35 and went to the line strongly,'' he said.

"Hayley has grown up with greyhounds, as a kid she was often pottering around Stuart Dickinson's breeding and rearing place at Cawdor, but she has only become really serious about the industry over the past two years.''
