Daintree Idol Impresses At Wenty

By Jeff Collerson
DAINTREE IDOL was such a flop in four Victorian country races last November she was given away for nothing but on Friday night her new owner, NSW country trainer Trevor Robinson, watched in awe as she flew over the Wentworth Park 520m trip in 29.56.

That was fastest time of the night and became her fifth win for Robinson, with the bitch now unbeaten in three starts since having her tonsils removed in March.

"Her tonsils were giving her a bit of trouble so my veterinary surgeon suggested we remove them and be done with it,'' Robinson said.

"DAINTREE IDOL was going reasonably well before that operation but she is flying now.

"I thought she could run about 29.70 last Friday so was rapt when she clocked 29.56.

"That was a fifth-grade heat so I'm hoping she draws a wide box in this Saturday night's final because she likes to move to the right.

"When I got her DAINTREE IDOL was just 20 months old and she is by Fernando Bale, whose progeny are often said do not reach their peak until they turn two, which she did 11 days before her win last Friday.''

Canya Supersonic wil be set for the Ladbokes Thunderbolt, the world's richest shourt course race, following her impressive first-up win at Wentworth Park on Friday night.

The Ed Burrett-owned Canya Supersonic took her record for new trainer Bradley Barnes, brother of champion trainer Minnie Finn, to two wins from two starts with a determined 280m win in a slick 16.01.

At her only previous outing for Barnes, Canya Supersonic has clocked a best time of the day 17.98 in scoring over 320m at Richmond.

"She won six from 19 starts for Ed when she was trained in Victoria but she is not very strong and she struggled in 400m races there,'' Barnes said.

"Her win on Friday was encouraging because she had to work hard in the early stages and she had not previously seen the Wentworth Park track.

"I have trained dogs previously for Ed so he sent her to me, hoping she might measure up to be good enough to tackle thr Thunderbolt.''

Burrett, who won 14 races with Let's Win Coin, a daughter of Barnes' former good sprinter Let's Win Meisha, is based in SA.

Heats of the Thunderbolt will be held at Wagga, Bulli, Gosford, Taree, Goulburn, Richmond, Dubbo and Grafton from May 31 to June 9, with semi-finals over 350m at Grafton on June 16 and the $75,000 to the winner final there on June 22.

Inaugural running of the Thunderbolt was held in 2022 when the locally trained Rob Andrews-prepared Integrity Mae edged out Orson Laurie in a tight finish, while Vamoose took out last year's final for Hunter Valley trainer Sue Smith.
