Robbo Legacy Continues

By Jeff Collerson
Stylish Robbo will be back at The Gardens shortly chasing her seventh successive win and while she is obviously the star of owner-trainer Rachael Maguire's team, the sentimental kennel favourite is litter brother Ted Robbo.

Maguire, daughter of renowned breeder and trainer Gary Robertson and his late wife Eileen, understandably has a particularly soft spot for Ted Robbo.

"Stylish Robbo is only 26kg, she is my little pocket rocket and is a real lid-pinger so obviously to see her win her sixth on the trot at The Gardens last Friday is a massive thrill,'' Maguire said.

"But Ted Robbo, who has had three wins and four placings from 15 starts, holds a special place in our hearts because of what he went through as a puppy.

"When he was a baby our property was flooded and he swallowed some contaminaTed water.

"I discovered him unable to walk with his face and his ears all puffed up.

"Because I couldn't find a tick I rushed him to our veterinary surgeon John Newell, and he diagnosed the problem as tetanus, a potentially fatal bacterial infection."

Ted Robbo is a kennel favourite.

"It was almost as if this puppy had rigor mortis, he was all stiff and unable to walk, yet was still breathing.

"For nearly three months Dad and I kept Ted Robbo alive with intravenous fluids.

"We were so relieved when he survived and recovered but after all that were resigned to keeping him as a pet.

"Yet here he is winning races."

"While Stylish Robbo is the star a bitch called Kenzie Robbo, her litter sister and another sister of Ted Robbo, has had two wins and two seconds from her past four starts.''

While Stylish Robbo's six-win streak has been over 400m, Maguire said with time she should be able to run 500m.

"Her run home time of 11.50 at The Gardens last Friday was her strongest yet and indicates she will be able to go further,'' her father Gary said.

Hello Robbo, the dam of Stylish, Kenzie and Ted, won 16 races for the Robertson family and is a daughter of their bitch Rachael Robbo, a 17 race winner, who was produced by another of their greyhounds, Rose Robbo.

It's fitting that the Robertson family is enjoying continued success, as 50 years ago the late Eileen Robertson was exercising their greyhounds around the streets of inner Sydney's Annandale up to a few hours before she gave birth to their first child, Peter.

Bert Robbo gave Gary and Eileen their first city winner on December 28, 1998, while Rachael Robbo, long considered their best greyhound, was a brilliant beginner - just like her granddaughter Stylish Robbo.
