Missing Richmond Works Well For Vic

By Jeff Collerson
Bolt Wave, whose 29.71 win at Wentworth Park on Saturday was second fastest time of the night, was only entered for the meeting because he missed out being drawn at Richmond last Wednesday.

Trainer Vic Sultana had been keen to start the dog at Richmond but when Bolt Wave missed a straight out draw he changed plans and nominated the dog for Wentworth Park.

Bolt Wave rewarded trainer Sultana and owner Vincent Sun with a brilliant all-the-way win, posting fast early splits of 5.38 and 13.82 before holding off National Derby finalist August Bob to win by just under a length.

Quickest figures on Saturday were recorded by the Craig Chappelow-trained Overflow Jill, who began brilliantly from box one and after reeling off a dazzling initial section of 5.29, bolted away to score by five lengths in a personal best 29.60.

It was Overflow Jill's sixth win in 10 Wentworth Park appearances and lifted the two-year-old's earnings to over $37,000.

Kangaroo Jack will be set for the Ladbrokes Golden Easter Egg following Saturday's 12 lengths defeat of National Derby winner History's Coming in a slick 29.73.

Trained by Syd Swain, who won the Golden Easter Egg in 2003 with Cyrus The Virus, the ever-improving Kangaroo Jack led all the way in 29.73, with History's Coming missing the jump and running on well from fifth on the back straight.

After the race Syd Swain said: "Kangaroo Jack has been up for quite a while so I will ease him up for a few weeks and get him ready for the Easter Egg heats at Wenty on March 30.

"I must admit that when Kangaroo Jack went straight to the front I expected him to run faster time, because he has clocked 29.61 at Wentworth Park.

"But still, they don't write the time on the cheque do they?"

Dinali Keroma's all-the-way win as a $14 outsider on Saturday night did not surprise his 80-year-old owner Ray Pitstock or his wife Susan, who trains the dog.

"He has been trialling the place down but until tonight he has not nailed the start the way we knew he could,'' Ray Pitstock said.

"While Dinali Keroma is considered a wide runner he only moves as far from the inside rail as the lure goes.

"He completely follows the lure, and in that respect he is exactly the same as his sire Dual Keroma, who won 21 races for us and did the same thing every time he raced.''

First Lady, prepared by Garry Frazer who combines training thoroughbreds with greyhounds, landed her first Wentworth Park win on Saturday with an all-the-way performance in a slick 29.75.

First Lady is a litter sister to Good Odds Cobber, fastest qualifier for the recent group one Ladbrokes National Derby at Wentworth Park.
