Leg Speed Earns Crack At Group 1

By Jeff Collerson
Trainer Mark Gatt describes the dog as "a bit of a klutz" but Saturday night's last-to-first win in a slick 29.63 has earned Leg Speed a crack at next Saturday night's Group 1 Ladbrokes Paws Of Thunder.

Leg Speed had only five rivals in Saturday's 520m fifth grade but after being last with a lap to go he secured a dream run along the rails to be second on the back straight.

After hitting the front soon after Leg Speed careered away to score by four lengths, running home in a slashing 11.57.

"After that, I'd be silly not to nominate him for the Paws Of Thunder but Leg Speed is a bit of a klutz and will probably make a mistake or do something wrong in his heat and get beaten,'' Gatt said.

"But now that he has run 29.63 he deserves a crack at a Group One race.''

Trainer Andy Lord's Paws Of Thunder stocks are also soaring after his candidates Nangar Larry and Screaming Jet scored dazzling wins on Saturday night at Wentworth Park.

Nangar Larry grabbed the lead on the back straight to win the top grade 520m in a personal best 29.60 while 19 minutes later his kennelmate Screaming Jet wasn't headed in taking out a fourth and fifth grade in 29.66.

Owner Jordan Edwards could hardly contain himself after Toad's Turnpike, which he bred from a "hopeless" race bitch, led all the way to win a 520m fifth grade in a personal best time of 30.05.

Sent out a $21 outsider despite having box one, Toad's Turnpike is by Pindari Express from Android Society, who failed to win at any of her 35 races.

After Toad's Turnpike's win, the dog's second at Wentworth Park, Edwards said: "People thought I was mad to breed from a bitch which couldn't win a race but I was encouraged because she was a half-sister to My Lady Day, who has been a great producer.

"But full marks to Toad's Turnpike's trainer Steve Lambley, whose patience and attention to detail with this dog have been fantastic.''

Trainer Ray Webster had to be content with the $25,000 second prizemoney with Father Rick in Thursday's Golden Sands Classic at Albion Park but bounced back with a Wentworth Park winner when "super mum" Lagoon Mandy scored in 30.11 on Saturday.

Lagoon Mandy whelped a litter of pups five months ago but Webster said: "Only reason I put her back into work after she weaned her babies was that when she was racing previously she never realised her full potential.

"She always had issues of some kind but I believed she could become a top-class middle distance bitch.

"Lagoon Mandy is so clean-winded and she never blows after a 520m race so I plan to step her up to 600m soon.''

Battle Royal lived up to a recent sizzling Wentworth Park trial when he led throughout in a tidy 29.82 for owner-trainer-breeder Subawa Ngurah on Saturday night.

"He flew in a post-to-post hand-slip at Wenty not long ago but until tonight has tended to be a bit sluggish in his races,'' Ngurah said.

Jeremy Moss, a PENRITH real estate agent who races greyhounds for relaxation, was rewarded with a Wentworth Park winner when In The Sky led all the way to win Saturday's opening race for trainer Jay Opetaia in 30.25.

"I have had a lot of fun and a bit of success owning greyhounds and it keeps me out of the pub,'' Moss said.

"I bought In The Sky as a pup while I also own Street Of Dreams, which Jay also trains and who has won 14 races while previously I raced BOBBY The Brute, who was trained for me by Jason Magri and who won 18 races.''
