The Beaches Train Trebles For Fun

By Jeff Collerson
Barbara and Michael Beach have only 10 greyhounds in work but when they landed a winning treble at Casino last Thursday they achieved their third hat-trick of winners in six weeks.

The Casino-based couple won over 411m with Mr Favour and made punters happy with victories to long odds-on favourites Unquenchable over 484m and Magic Secret in a 411m event.

However, the Beaches, who moved from Dubbo to Casino 20 years ago, are still chasing that elusive big race success.

"Magic Secret is the best in our kennel and she reached the semi-finals of the Million Dollar Chase at Wentworth Park on October 6,'' Barbara said.

"But while we are having a good run this year we are still desperate to win a group race.

"Michael's family had greyhounds so we were probably always going to be involved in the sport.''

Dawn Garrett's former top-class race bitch Vicki's Queen looks set to take up in the breeding barn where she left off from the racetrack.

Sammy Ethan, from her first litter to Fernando Bale and whelped in January last year, was most impressive winning on debut at Wentworth Park on Friday night in 29.86, a brilliant time for a maiden youngster.

Sammy Ethan, who is trained by Mark Gatt for owner John Fitzgerald, posted slick early splits of 5.48 and 13.78 so will be a short-priced favourite for the final of Friday's series at Wentworth Park next Saturday night.

Dawn Garrett, who has always relished the breeding side of the sport, restricted Vicki's Queen to just 28 starts for 10 wins but under trainer Peter Lagogiane's care, the greyhound was runner-up to Pay Call in race record time of 29.44 in the 2021 Ladies Bracelet - and in the same year was a finalist in the Paws Of Thunder and the Golden Easter Egg.

Vicki's Queen has a second litter, sired by Aussie Infrared, which are eight months old.

Another former smart sprinter who produced a Wentworth Park winner from her first litter on Friday was Cheeky Lass, who was bred by Wilma and Tony Messina and whose dozen racetrack successes netted $45,000.

On Friday Cheeky Cheeky, a daughter of Aussie Infrared and Cheeky Lass and raced by the Messinas, won at her Wentworth Park debut in 30.26.

Cheeky Cheeky reeled off a dazzling first split of 5.37 and set up a massive lead in the middle stages before fading in the straight to win by a neck.

After the race trainer Tony Messina said: "She clocked a first split of 5.48 when she trialled 30.48 at her first look at Wenty since then she has had two wins and two placings from four starts over 320m and 340m at the provincials.

"So she should get stronger because tonight she was stepping up 200m after those short course races.''

Cheeky Cheeky has time on her side too, as she is aged just 19 months.

Archer Fly High, who broke through for his first win in a moderate 30.41 at Wentworth Park on Friday night, is unlikely to reach the dizzy heights of his Group-One-winning half brothers Tommy Shelby and Jungle Deuce, but trainer Peter Rodgers believes he can develop into a good stayer.

"He is bred to run a distance and his run home times suggest he is already looking for longer than 520m,'' Rodgers said after Archer Fly High was slowly away and came from a distant fourth on the back straight to win by three lengths on Friday.

Archer Fly High is raced by Sydney floor tiler Vince Bennett, who owned the dog's dam Serena Fly High when she won her maiden at Wentworth Park in a slick 29.82 in May, 2015.

Rodgers has also announced that his Golden Easter Egg winner Simply Limelight has been registered for stud duties.

"The stud game is very competitive so I don't expect to make a lot of money out of him but I'm certain Simply Limelight will be a successful sire,'' Rodgers said.

Simply Limelight has been retired to stud.
