Young Stars Battle On Saturday

By Jeff Collerson
Overflow Beau has won each of his two latest Wentworth Park starts from boxes seven and five but trainer Craig Chappelow is happy seeing his exciting youngster in box one in heat three of the Young Star series at headquarters on Saturday night.

Overflow Beau clocked smart first splits of 5.45 and 5.46 before covering the 520m in fast times of 29.69 and 29.65 in his all-the-way Wentworth Park wins on September 27 and 30.

"When he draws away from the fence Overflow Beau runs in a straight line before gradually working his way over to the rails, he doesn't veer over sharply,'' Chappelow said.

"But now he has gone up in class I'm pleased to see him in box one and I'm confident he will handle it okay.

"My only concern is that for some reason box one at Wenty can bring dogs unstuck, they can miss the kick from the rails there.''

The Young Star has attracted eight strong heats with the winners advancing to Friday's $25,000 to the winner final on Million Dollar Chase night at Wentworth Park.

The lightly-raced Fernando Quality will be chasing his ninth win in just 10 starts when he exits box two in heat five of the Young Star.

Unbeaten in two Wentworth Park outings and boasting a personal best of 29.91, Fernando Quality resumed after a four months' break to win in a sizzling 22.10sec over 400m at Bulli on September 19.

Because the dog has not tackled 520m since April, Darryl Thomas, whose partner Michelle Sultana trains the talented speedster, said: "Fernando Quality probably needs to lead to win but he is well boxed and has good early pace.

"So he has a terrific chance of being in front around the first turn.''

Andy Lord's Bandit Jane finished third to Zipping Orlando and Fat Boy's Charm in last year's Young Star final and he and his wife JODIE have three strong chances in Saturday night's heats of the 2023 series.

JODIE has Midnight Spritz in box seven in heat one and Black Mistery in box eight in heat four while Andy has One Hot Bandit starting from box seven in heat two.

Each of the Lord kennel's representatives are suitably drawn as they like to use plenty of the track, with Black Misery looking to be extremely well placed.

Best graded dog on Saturday is Chance Model, a winner of four from seven Wentworth Park outings, who will start from box six in the opening event, the 520m fifth grade Ladbroke It! Stakes.

Chance Model has had just three starts since a spell but defeated a good field two starts back when he won over 365m at Nowra on September 18.

Trainer Steve Fairbairn said: "Chance Model is certainly well graded but he hasn't been beginning as smartly as he was last preparation.

"I think it's only a matter of him regaining his confidence and I was encouraged by how he went in a box-to-box trial I gave him at Wentworth Park last week.

"He broke 18sec to the back so that indicates he could be ready to reproduce his best Wentworth Park form.''

With a personal best time of 29.72, recorded in April, Chance Model boasts the quickest Wenty figures of the eight starters in Saturday's race.
