Hopefully, A Very Happy Birthday For Vamoose

By Jeff Collerson
Vamoose turns three on Sunday and the Grafton Thunderbolt winner could celebrate his birthday 24 hours later by taking out the 450m Maitland Supporters Club Father's Day Gift, worth $4800 to the winner.

When Vamoose won over 350m at Goulburn on Friday it was his fifth successive victory in fastest time of the day and took his record to an astonishing 34 wins from 58 races.

That remarkable strike rate though is nothing new to this family of greyhounds which has created arguably the greatest short course dam-line of all time.

Vamoose's dam Blue Thunda won 18 of 23 starts, while her mother Whinging Wrench was first past the post in 20 of her 37 outings.

And Tommie's Placard, the dam of Whinging Wrench, won 17 races and produced four track record holders.

The "Vamoose family" is raced and trained by Sue Smith and her partner John Miles, whose daughter-in-law Noelene Walsh has My Sapphire, a daughter of Blue Thunda and herself a winner of 14 from 34 appearances, in whelp to boom sire Shima Shine.

After Vamoose's Goulburn win owner-trainer Sue Smith said: "I've had him checked out and he pulled up 100 per cent well.

"Now he will go back to Maitland for the Father's Day Gift.''

Vamoose steps up in distance next Monday but the sensational sprinter has already won over the 450m trip at Maitland in 24.96, just .40sec outside track record time.

And while he is justifiably considered a world class short course greyhound, Vamoose did win over 520m at Wentworth Park in a handy 30.03 in October, 2022, a month after clocking a slick 29.82 in finishing third over the same course.

The ever-popular Vamoose

Oscar Boaz notched his sixth win in 20 starts on Saturday night in a nippy 30.09 at Wentworth Park but the dog's road to success has been anything but smooth.

Trainer Caitlyn Brewer's husband Ricky said after Saturday's win: "The way Oscar Boaz is going now is a lot different to how his future looked at the educational stage.

"He had to be broken in three times before he was interested in becoming a race dog.

"Even then he looked like he might only be a short course greyhound but his strong second from box seven at Wentworth Park on August 10 and his win from box eight on Saturday shows he can run a solid 520m.

"And while he has drawn wide at his past two starts at Wenty, Oscar Boaz is a lot better dog from an inside box.''
