Star Sprinter Out Of Nationals

By Simon Orchard
Group 1 winning sprinter Wyndra All Class is set to be withdrawn from the GCA National Sprint Championship at the Meadows on August 26.

The 2023 National Futurity winner tore a bicep muscle in Thursday night’s NSW National Sprint final at Wentworth Park, a race in which she finished sixth behind all-the-way winner Modern Swinger, but she had earned her place in the National Final as a wildcard being the highest ranked sprinter to qualify for a State final.

Owner Brian Barton was left “shattered” after an early morning phone call from trainer Daniel Gatt on Friday.

“Normally Dan rings me in a happy mood to talk about what’s next but I could tell as soon as I heard his voice something was wrong,” Barton said.

“I took her straight to the vet and she needs four to six weeks off the track which puts her out of the Nationals, the Megastar, and probably the Million Dollar Chase. I just want to cry mate, it’s devastating,” Barton said.

“We’ve had her sitting close to the wildcard spot for the Nationals all year and she’s been in second and third place on that list for months. Now for this to happen, it just burns me mate and I feel like I keep getting knocked down at the moment.”

“I was really looking forward to it too. I was going to head down to Melbourne and spend some time away and just enjoy myself after all that’s happened.”

Wyndra All Class has won just over $200,000 in prizemoney from 40 race starts

Barton sadly lost wife Sue to a lengthy cancer battle in July.

Meanwhile, trainer Daniel Gatt was trying to see the bright side for his kennel star.

“It’s devastating for Brian because it knocks her out of all the big races coming up but unfortunately this type of thing happens in racing. We’ll give her time to rest and look after her,” Gatt said.

“She’s done some great things this year and you never know, it might be a good thing for her on the other side. Maybe I’m a bit hardened to injury after all these years but hopefully there’s a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow for her and Brian.”
