Leg Speed Still Looking For First Wenty Win

By Jeff Collerson
Leg Speed has been a champ at Dapto but a chump at Wentworth Park and Wednesday night's city meeting might go a long way to predicting how far the Mark Gatt-trained dog can progress on the track.

Leg Speed has box seven in the Ladbrokes Sports Bar Open Stakes, a 520m fifth grade, but despite winning in a near record 29.37 at Dapto and clocking a blistering 29.64 there he has finished among the tailenders in each of two most recent Wentworth Park appearances.

He goes into Wednesday's race with just three placings from eight Wentworth Park outings and trainer Mark Gatt admits his dog's Wentworth Park form is baffling.

"Maybe box seven will suit him but I've given up trying to work him out,'' Gatt conceded.

"When he ran seventh at Wentworth Park on July 19 I didn't think he had much luck but when something does goes wrong for Leg Speed in a race he handles it badly because he is a bit of a klutz.

"People are asking me if he does not do his best at Wenty but I trialled him there on Tuesday night and I have never had a dog go faster at the track.

"In a post-to-post hand-slip he recorded 23.85 and that is airborne, a dog should be able to win anything off a run like that.''

Rarely does a maiden or even a fifth grader post fastest time of the meeting but Fantastic Spike achieved both those performances in 472m wins at Bulli at his only two starts.

Fantastic Spike makes his Wentworth Park debut in Wednesday night's Ladbroke It! fifth grade over 520m and from box three looms as the best bet of the meeting.

In his debut at Bulli on July 18 Fantastic Spike came from second early to win easily in 26.27, only .49sec outside the track record set by the mighty Aston Dee Bee in April, 2017.

Fantastic Spike showed that was no fluke with an even more remarkable last-to-first effort to win in 26.36 over the same course a week later.

Trainer Richard Muscat has three of the seven entries in Wednesday's Ladbrokes Same Race Multi Stakes, a 520m fifth grade, with box positions favouring Charlm Bullet, who has drawn two.

His kennelmates Bolt Charlm Bolt and Bolt Saint Bolt will exit boxes three and eight respectively but Charlm Bullet should make full use of his close to the rails draw.

He had box six at Wentworth Park on July 12 and after jumping only fairly, showed great zip to cross to the inside fence and lead around the first turn.

Charlm Bullet retained the lead entering the back straight but had no answer when tackled immediately by the outstanding prospect and noted strong finisher One Hot Bandit.

That greyhound came away to win easily but Charlm Bullet clocked an extra smart 29.92 in finishing second, and a repeat of those figures should see him first home in Wednesday's easier race.

Richard Muscat could land a winning double as his bitch Zipping Abigail looks graded to win Wednesday's Where Else But Wenty? Stakes, a 520m fifth grade.

Zipping Abigail has won four races at Wentworth Park while her five rivals have compiled a total of only five wins at the track.

Although she lacks early pace and has box five, the small field will suit Zipping Abigail, who possesses a powerful finish at the end of 520m and drops in class after finishing second and fourth in tougher races at her past three Wenty outings.

Tulsa is the second most populated city in the state of Oklahoma, USA, and two of greyhound racing's most promising youngsters bear the name when they go into battle in Wednesday's Ladbrokes Easy Form Stakes, a 520m fifth grade.

The Mark Farrugia-trained King Of Tulsa, who overcame a chequered passage to win from box two in 30.24 at Wentworth Park on July 26, has box one, while the Michelle Sultana-prepared Tulsa King, who has drawn five, led all the way on debut at headquarters in a flying 29.75 at the same meeting.

Sultana's partner Darryl Thomas said: "That was an impressive performance by Tulsa King because he had not previously been tried over 520 metres.

"So he should be capable of further improvement.''

But on Wednesday the draw favours King Of Tulsa with the result likely to depend on which of the "Tulsa" greyhounds gets the better of the start.
