Time To Show Real Leg Speed At Wenty

By Jeff Collerson
Dapto sensation Leg Speed will return to Wentworth Park on Wednesday in a bid to amend his disappointing record at headquarters.

Leg Speed has been sent out an odds-on favourite in six of his seven Wentworth Park starts which have produced just three placings.

But since resuming from a spell the Mark Gatt-trained speedster has won over 520m at Dapto in 29.37, just .04sec outside Fantastic Dotty's eight years old track record figures while on Thursday he won there again, scoring by 10 lengths in a best of the night 29.64.

"He is a fast dog so I'm hoping on Wednesday Leg Speed can bring his Dapto form to Wenty Park,'' Mark Gatt said.

Mitchell Dickson took the first step towards his dream of becoming a full-time greyhound trainer when Federal Light gave him his first Wentworth Park winner last Wednesday night.

Federal Light, purchased earlier this year from Scott Eaton, was beaten out of the boxes by Hickman but swept around that greyhound to lead at the first turn before holding on to win a 520m fifth grade by a length in 30.19.

"I took out my trainer's licence in March, 2020, and have five greyhounds in work, along with a retired racer, on my small property at Wilberforce,'' Dickson said.

"I work full time for an insurance company but am hoping to be able to go full-time with the greyhounds within two years.

"Until Federal Light's win last week my training higlight was when she finished second to John Finn's Zipping Sabrina in a heat of the Ultra Sense at Wentworth Park on March 31.''

When she led to the home bend before being run down by Zipping Sabrina in that race, Federal Light posted her best Wentworth Park figures of 29.94.

When Sunburnt Highway retired 15 months ago as the winner of a record 39 races at Wentworth Park, owner-trainers Judith and John Richardson registered the dog for stud duties.

But because brood bitch owners mysteriously shunned their champion, the Richardsons purchased a well-bred bitch and mated her with Sunburnt Highway, or "Billy" or the Richardsons.

Judith said: "John has always said that before he dies he wants to see Sunburnt Highway's puppies on the ground so we bought an unraced bitch called Zipping Twix from Marty Hallinan.

"Zipping Twix is a magnificent looking daughter of Zipping Truvy and hopefully is now in pup to Sunburnt Highway.''

Zipping Truvy won 10 of just 30 starts, ran a track record, and produced the best run of her career when she a was fast finishing third, beaten only a length, behind Feral Franky and Zipping Clive over 520m at Wentworth Park in August, 2019.
