Draw And Class Points To Barak Being Best Bet

By Jeff Collerson
Aston Barak's most recent Wentworth Park win was in top grade on March 22 but the smart sprinter looks poised to notch his 11th victory at headquarters after drawing box one in the grades two and three Mitch Bates Masters on Saturday night.

The Jason Fletcher-trained dog became eligible for veterans' races this month and was far from disgraced when a distant third to the extremely talented Fernando Hunter in a far tougher assignment at Wentworth Park last Saturday night.

Aston Barak drew box seven and after being hampered crossing to the rails, found himself in a distant fifth position on the back straight before making up ground over the final 150m.

He has a "dream" draw on Saturday, with Ziggy Stardust, a moderate beginner better known at Wentworth Park as a 720m performer, alongside him in box two.

Rampani, whose Wentworth Park win on June 3 was outstanding, will be out of action for a month and will miss Saturday night's Ladbrokes Same Race Multi Stakes, a 520m fourth and fifth grade.

But his trainer Peter Sims has a more than handy "back up" in Try Catch Up, who has box two in the same race.

The former Victorian trounced a classy lineup over 457m at Temora on Tuesday, stopping the clock at a sensational 25.45sec.

"That time was only a length outside the track record set three months ago and it was a great trial for Saturday night at Wenty,'' trainer Sims said.

"Try Catch Up has been unplaced in two Wentworth Park starts but he went into the first without a trial on the track so if he is going to handle Wenty he should be ready to do it now.

"He is a good railer so box two suits him and while he would be a certainty if this event was at Temora, a track he seems to love, I expect him to run a big race.''

Barry Gibbons, whose greyhounds Foran Banner and Venus Banner won heats last Saturday night, believes whichever of his pair gets the better of the start will be the one to beat in Saturday night's sixth event, a bitches' fifth grade final.

Foran Banner took the lead at the first turn to win her heat from box six in fastest qualifying time of 29.96 while her sister Venus Banner began brilliantly and led throughout in 30.10.

Venus Banner's early splits were 5.40 and 13.85 while Foran Banner did not lead at the first mark and clocked 13.91 for the second section.

"There is nothing between my pair so I think it will come down to who gets the better start,'' Gibbons said.

"But Venus Banner does have that brilliant early pace.''

Gibbons' pair could face stern opposition from Sonia Keeping, who bungled the start before a fast finishing two lengths second behind the other heat winner Nangar Pearl, who won in 30.07.

Sonia Keeping is prepared by Chris Green, who has been training only since early last year and whose sole Wentworth Park winner was Lee Keeping in a 280m midweek race on April 22, 2022.

Sonia Keeping has drawn ideally in box one in Saturday night's and her trainer said: "I was surprised to see her muck up the start like she did in her heat.

"If she had not done that I think she would have broken 30sec for the 520m, because she recorded one of her best ever run home times.

"She gets her chance from box one on Saturday.''

Wentworth Park group one winners Simply Limelight (box six) and Wyndra All Class (box seven) meet in Saturday's Ladbrokes Bet Ticker Free-For-All but will need to do everything right to topple the perfectly drawn Screaming Jet in box one.

The Andy Lord-trained Screaming Jet has won at each of his past five Wentworth Park starts and recorded a slick 29.64 from box eight in Free-For-All company on June 14.
