Wide Mia Still Fast Enough

By Jeff Collerson
Mia She's Fast posted her personal best Wentworth Park time of 29.85 on Saturday night but trainer Frank Hurst was left wondering how much quicker she could go if she did not run so wide.

Mia She's Fast began with her usual dash to lead throughout in a 520m fifth grade but raced in the middle of the track for much of the race before scoring by two-and-a-half lengths.

After the race Hurst, who has only Mia She's Fast in his kennels, said: ''She does not get anywhere near as wide at Gosford, Richmond or even Bulli, where a lot of dogs run off.

"Really, even though she has now won four races at Wentworth Park, she does not actually like the joint.''

Angel Glow, who has a litter of pups, again proved a "super mum" with a dashing all-the-way win in Saturday night's Masters event, clocking 29.75, equalling her best Wenty figures.

Only a tick slower was Modern Swinger, who notched his seventh win in 11 Wentworth Park appearances in a 520m fourth and fifth grade, leading all the way in 29.76.

Trainer Scott Tyson has always contended that his talented sprinter Zambora Tiger was a far better greyhound when able to be the pacemaker and the dog confirmed that belief with a six lengths win on Saturday in 29.82.

Zambora Tiger's time matched the figures posted by the Ruth Matic-trained Free-For-All winner Len Me Dad, who gradually gained control after an early battle for the lead with Fascinate Mel, who wound up second, two lengths astern.

Owner James Cortis revealed he is training Saturday night's first-up 30.12 Wentworth Park winner Aussie Power "by default" after a leading trainer rejected the greyhound.

Cortis explained that after Aussie Power had broken in impressively, a top professional had pre-trained the dog and was set to be the permanent trainer.

"But when Aussie Power clocked 24.50 in a post-to-post slip at Wenty the trainer gave him back to me, pointing out he needed the dog to get down to 24.20 to be a worthwhile proposition for him.

"That was fair enough because after I got him home and many weeks later, Aussie Power still only clocked 24.50 in another post-to-post slip.

"But her is still learning and I still think he is going to develop into a handy dog.''

Cortis purchased Aussie Power as a puppy on the recommendation of Michael Eberand, owner of the dog's sire Aussie infrared.

Cortis said: "Aussie Power is a half-brother to Poacher, who won 16 races for his owner Brendan Anthes, and he was one of only two pups left from the litter his dam Powered had whelped to Aussie Infrared in May, 2021.

"I bought both pups for a total of around $13,000 and they were reared by Glenn Starr, who did a fantastic job.''

Training honours on Saturday night were shared by north coast breeder Allan Woods, who won with his brilliant beginner Half Past Tipsy and her litter sister Double Polka, along with Owen Langley, who was successful with Black Wizard and Loves A Tipple, both raced by that trainer's main client Mick Vella.
