Ausure Ultra Sense (G3)

Friday Night Features At Wenty

By Jeff Collerson
Fahey's Magic hasn't raced for three weeks but hand-slips should have the marvelously consistent Jane Carruthers-trained greyhound ready to enhance her fine record at Wentworth Park on Friday night.

Going into the race boasting a tally of 10 wins and four placings from 16 starts, Fahey's Magic has box five in heat four of the 520m Ultra Sense fifth grade series.

Although Carruthers' husband John said they would have preferred Fahey's Magic drawn on the rails, their greyhound has an amazing record from boxes five, six, seven and eight.

Fahey's Magic has won seven of her nine races from those four outside draws and equalled her personal best Wentworth Park figures of 29.86 when she exited box six last November.

The Carruthers family has a good chance of landing a double as their "super mum" Angel Glow has drawn box one in heat two of the 520m Ron Arnold Masters Stakes.

Angel Glow, who became eligible to contest Masters’ races in January, has won 14 of 32 starts but been lightly raced due to motherhood duty.

"Angel Glow, had a litter by Barcia Bale 11 months ago and she is perfectly boxed on Friday,'' John Carruthers said.

Black Wizard's trainer Owen Langley continues to be laid up following a knee replacement operation a fortnight ago but insists the dog is fit enough to maintain his unbeaten box one record in heat three of the Ultra Sense.

"Black Wizard has won three out of three from box one and while I have been recuperating, my next door neighbour and fellow trainer Brendan Anthes has been keeping him fit for me,'' Langley said.

"Brendan said the dog has been trialling well so even though he has not raced for over three weeks Black Wizard is ready to go.

"My knee replacement was long overdue because it was the result of me being bowled over by a greyhound in the catching pen a long time ago.''

She is not renowned for her strength at the end of 520m but Wilson's Pick is boxed to lead her rivals a merry dance in heat six of the Ultra Sense.

Wilson's Pick, who has box seven and is undefeated in three appearances wearing the black rug. is chasing her fifth successive win.

Trainer Martin Bowe said: "She is also unbeaten in three starts from box six so she likes being drawn wide.

"I trialled her over 520m at Wentworth Park on March 21 and she produced her customary quick first three splits before covering the 520m in 30.12, a tick faster than the quickest of her Wenty race times.

"Then on Monday I took Wilson's Pick to The Gardens and gave her a post-to-post hit-out just to blow the cobwebs away.''

Cawbourne Roses is better known as a stayer but she could have heat eight of the Ultra Sense runs to suit her.

Fascinate Trump is the form dog of the field but he has come up with an awkward box three draw as Rivello, a very wide runner, has box two.

Rivello and Fascinate Trump are blessed with good speed to the first turn so the chances of them coming together are high.

Cawbourne Roses lacks early pace in sprint races but is racing well for trainer Wayne Meilak and trialled a slick 29.92 over the Wentworth Park 520m trip on March 15.

On Friday Cawbourne Roses has box six but will relish having just half a dozen rivals and should make full use of having an empty box on her left.
