Where To Go With Modern Swinger?

By Jeff Collerson
Modern Swinger left his owner-trainer CHRIS O'Brien in a quandary after the dog's nine lengths winning romp at Wentworth Park on Saturday night.

Modern Swinger collided at box rise but re-balanced and was soon in front before bolting away to notch his fourth win in six starts - all at Wentworth Park - in a slick 29.85 in a 520m fifth grade.

"He is too old to contest the Group 3 New Sensation Heats on March 29 but I am not sure about throwing such an inexperienced dog into the March 25 Heats of the Ladbrokes Golden Easter Egg,'' O'Brien said.

"My other option is to take him to Melbourne for the Launching Pad series at Sandown.

"In January I purchased an entry ticket into the race, intending to use it for Modern Swinger's litter sister Quantifiable.

"But she has had a setback so I have the option of using the ticket for Modern Swinger.

"Although his winning time on Saturday was a tenth slower than his previous best at Wenty, I reckon he would have gone a fair bit quicker had he not bumped the dog next to him as he left the boxes.''

Valor Bale after his Country Classic Heat Victory at Richmond

Interstate greyhounds Valor Bale, trained in Victoria by Mark Delbridge, and Shaye, from Jedda Cutlack's kennels in Queensland, starred in Friday's Heats of the Country Classic at Richmond and The Gardens.

And on Saturday night at Dubbo, Delbridge took out the quinella in another Country Classic Heat with Ailee Bale and Zoha Bale.

Each of Delbridge's Country Classic hopefuls are by Allen Deed from Sammy Allen and are raced by their breeder, NSW-based Brendan Wheeler.

Shaye is also NSW owned and bred and is raced by her breeder Sonia Davis.

Shaye seems to have a knack of stepping up to the plate when she is in an important race, as she led all the way to take out the Group 2 Golden Sands Classic final at Albion Park on January 5.

Peter Davis, whose wife Sonia races Shaye, said: "Shaye is seldom the fastest dog in her race but sometimes the more opportunistic greyhound wins out.

"She goes up another level in her Country Classic semi-final at Dubbo next Saturday so has to draw a good box to have a real chance.

"Irrespective of how she fares she has earned $160,000 and won races from 400 to 600m so she has a future as a brood bitch.

"But her kennelmate Sorority, who finished a distant third to Shaye at The Gardens on Friday, is far quicker.

"Sorority led by a dozen lengths in a 630m race at Ipswich in October and looked set to smash the track record when she just pulled up.

"She has amazing ability but obviously has a mind of her own.''

Mark Delbridge said Valor Bale will go into Saturday night's Classic semi-finals at Dubbo without a trial on the track.

"He will have to go in cold, just like his sisters did in their Heat there last Saturday,'' Delbridge said.

"Valor Bale is going great and has had four wins and a second from his past five starts, but he usually plays up in the boxes and misses the kick.

"When he nailed the start at Richmond last Friday I knew he would be hard to catch.''

Delbridge rates Valor Bale "slightly faster'' than Ailee Bale and Zoha Bale, his Dubbo Heat quinella pair.
