Owen's Only One Chasing Good Odds

By Jeff Collerson
Black Firebrand is the only dog in Owen Langley's kennels but he only needs luck in running to gives the Berkshire Park trainer a finalist in next week's $13,000 to the winner Good Odds Harada Cup.

The inaugural running of the fifth grade Cup has attracted seven heats tomorrow night at Wentworth Park, with the winners and fastest runner-up going into the October 29 final which also includes a prize of two straws from Frank Hurst's 2019 TAB Million Dollar Chase winner Good Odds Harada.

Black Firebrand has box five in heat two and looks well placed in the low grade race after winning a Free-For-All at Wentworth Park three starts ago on September 14.

"He has not raced for three weeks but is ready to go,'' trainer Owen Langley said.

"After Black Firebrand finished sixth in a third and fourth grade at Wentworth Park on October 1 I gave him a couple of weeks off before trialling him over 414m at Lithgow last Saturday.

"He clocked 23.92, which isn't far outside the track record, and he got home very strongly.

"My only concern on Saturday night is box five because Black Firebrand doesn't like being crowded in the run to the first turn.

"But if they leave him alone he should be hard to beat.''

Bargo trainer Neville Brown's close friendship with Good Odds Harada's trainer Frank Hurst means he would especially love to win heat five on Saturday night with Sombrero.

But Brown concedes his dog faces a huge task to beat the Andy Lord-trained Canya Smoke Them, who is chasing his fifth straight Wentworth Park win in five weeks.

Sombrero has hit form, winning his past two races over 520m at Dapto and 472m at Bulli in fast times and Brown said: "He wants the fence so he is well drawn on Saturday in box two.

"But I'm a realist and if they went around two-out Canya Smoke Them would beat Sombrero for sure.

"Sombrero's fastest Wenty time is only 30.41 but I'm sure he can go quite a bit faster than that.''

Tasmanian-owned Highland Wonder became eligible to contest Masters races on Wednesday and trainer Greg Hore has lost no time getting the National Distance Championship finalist into veteran class.

Highland Wonder has box four in the 520m Robbie's Red Rocket Masters Stakes on Saturday night, and Hore believes the small field of six will suit his dog.

"Because he runs wide in the straights Highland Wonder would be better suited in box eight but he is going well enough to win if he has luck in running.''

Highland Wonder had box eight when third in a 520m fifth grade at Wentworth Park last Saturday and ran a fast 29.92 when he won a Free-For-All at Wentworth Park on August 31.

In form trainer Chris Carl has Outside World, who won a Masters race at Wentworth Park on October 12, in box seven, and he rates Highland Wonder the dog to beat on Saturday.

"Outside World had box three when she won at her last start but she is better suited on Saturday where she has box seven,'' Carl said.

Grim Madara has been placed in seven of his past 10 Wentworth Park starts, including five races over the past six weeks, but gets his chance to break through after drawing box one in heat three of the Good Odds Harada Cup.

Grim Madara looks well positioned as the greyhounds in boxes two and three get wide and he boasts a personal best Wentworth Park time of 29.90, posted from box one on September 7.

Hardest for Grim Madara to beat is likely to be the ideally drawn Persuasive, who was disappointing when last, from box three, at Wentworth Park last Saturday night.

But before that flop Persuasive had clocked a flying 24.02 in a post-to-post slip at Wentworth Park and goes into Saturday's race with a record of two wins from three appearances wearing the pink rug.

The Andy Lord-trained Winlock Piper, who has had three wins and a second from his past four Wentworth Park outings, looks Saturday's best bet after drawing box one in heat seven on the Good Odds Harada Cup.
