Vamoose Gets The Chance For Wenty Win

By Jeff Collerson
Vamoose struggles to run a strong 520m but gets his chance to score his first Wentworth Park win after drawing ideally in a moderate fifth grade there on Wednesday night.

Vamoose, who tends to run in the centre of the track, has box eight in the Where Else But Wenty? Stakes.

He has won five of his eight races from boxes six, seven and eight, and made the pace when second, beaten less than a length, by TAB Million Dollar Chase finalist Hold Me Up over 515m at LADBROKES GARDENS last Friday night.

While Vamoose has finished third in each of two Wentworth Park 520m appearances, his times of 30.01 and 29.82 remain far quicker than the figures posted by any of his six rivals on Wednesday.

In a combined 28 outings at Wentworth Park, the closest any of his opponents has got to Vamoose's times is Zipping Patch, who clocked 30.16 when third on September 7.

Vamoose's owner-trainer Susan Smith said: "My dog has trouble running out a strong 520m and my partner John Miles has been pestering me to revert to 400m races with him.

"Vamoose has box eight but because he has such brilliant early speed boxes don't matter much to him, it is just his inability to see out the 520m that is his worry.''

At LADBROKES GARDENS last week Vamoose was run down by Hold Me Up, who has drawn perfectly in box one in Wednesday night's Ladbrokes Same Race Multi Free-For-All, 520m.

Hold Me Up won a Million Dollar Chase semi-final at Wentworth Park in a fast 29.67 from an unsuitable box five draw on September 16 before finishing seventh, from box six, in McInerney's final.

But he followed that up with a strong second behind French Martini in track record time over 515m at LADBROKES GARDENS in a heat of the group 2 Black Top before coming from second on the home bend to edge out Vamoose there last Friday.

Hold Me Up's trainer Joe Comito said: "It was a top effort to run Vamoose down on that wet track at The Gardens last week.

"Hold Me Up pulled up well and has been bouncing around non-stop ever since.

"I love seeing him in box one so as long as he gets the start right he should get around the first bend in a reasonable position and be hard to beat.''

Hold Me Up's toughest opponent looms as the John Finn-trained Zipping Lyris, who has been unplaced at her past three starts but is suitably positioned out in box seven.

She is at her best at Wentworth Park where she has won five of 11 starts and boasts a sizzling personal best time of 29.68, from box eight, in August.

Our Boy Duke clocked a flying 26.12 winning from box one over 472m at Bulli at his most recent circle track start but trainer Rob Tyler believes he needs to be in front going through the catching pen if he is to win at Wentworth Park on Wednesday night.

Our Boy Duke has box one in the Ladbrokes Bet Ticker Stakes, a 520m fifth grade, and won in 30.18 at his race debut at Wentworth Park on April 27.

"He finished third and fourth in two subsequent Wenty appearances but disappointed me in both those races,'' trainer Rob Tyler said.

"On Wednesday he is drawn perfectly and is going really well but I've got the feeling he produces his best form at Wenty when he is able to hold the lead going through the pen.

"Andy Lord's dog Winlock Piper has won two of his past three starts at Wentworth Park and if he leads Our Boy Duke in the early stages I don't think we can beat him.''

Jane and John Carruthers, who trained the great Rapid Journey, winner of the 1998 National Sprint Championship, are back at Wentworth Park on Wednesday with the promising speedster Fahey's Magic.

She has box one in the winningedgeinvestments.com Stakes, a 520m fifth grade, but has not raced for six weeks and is tackling a journey beyond 401m for the first time.

John Carruthers said: "Fahey's Magic has trialled at Wentworth Park but only from the 280m boxes, we haven't had the opportunity to trial her over 520m there.''

At her most recent start, over 401m at Richmond on September 4, Fahey's Magic "came out running'' from box five and led all the way in 22.68, fastest time of the night.
