Buddy Prepared For Goulburn 'Debut'

By Jeff Collerson
Paua Of BUDDY, who shattered the Wagga 400m record with his runaway win in last Friday's GRNSW Southern Stars heat, has not raced at Goulburn but is well acquainted with Friday night's $50,000 to the winner final venue.

His Wagga-based owner-trainer David Jones said: "Paua Of BUDDY has had quite a few looks at Goulburn, he certainly knows his way around the place.

"I bred and educated him so he had a few hand-slips at Goulburn before I sent him down to Steve White to be trained in Victoria.

"While in Steve's kennels Paua Of BUDDY broke the 400m track record at Warragul, ran near record time at Ballarat and won the Bendigo Cup over425m so the 440m distance at Goulburn on Friday is ideal.

"After the Southern Stars final Paua Of BUDDY will return to Steve White's kennels in Victoria.

"I had been hoping for an outside box with Paua Of BUDDY in the Southern Stars final and he has box four but if he jumps as well as he can the draw shouldn't worry him.''

Also wishing for an outside alley was leading Victorian trainer Dave Knocker, whose daughter Kayla Cottrell trains Robbie Rotten, who has box one.

Robbie Rotten won his Southern Stars heat at Wagga in 22.82 while Paua Of BUDDY's record smashing time was 22.28.

"Kayla and I prefer Robbie Rotten drawn wide because he excels from outside alleys,'' Knocker said.

"If he misses the kick from box seven or eight he can still zip around them because he has so much early pace but from box one he could get chopped off.

"But box one is better than being in the middle, although if Paua Of BUDDY steps away with them we are all in big trouble.

"We couldn't be happier with Robbie Rotten though because he turns four in October and has won the Warragul Cup, been runner-up in the Shepparton Cup and was a Ballarat Cup finalist.

"He had one race at Goulburn last October when he finished unplaced but when he contested that he went to the track sight unseen.

"So at least he has had a race there.''
