Mickey On Track For Nationals

By Jeff Collerson
Mickey Doo took the first step on the road to next month's National Sprint Championship series when he annihilated his rivals with a near record 400m win at Maitland on Monday.

Having his first start for over a month, Mickey Doo did something he seldom does - beginning smartly  - and wasn't headed in winning by 10 lengths in 22.12, just .25sec wide of the track record.

The win lifted Mickey Doo's strike rate to an impressive 16 wins from 27 starts, with trainer Mark Davidson commenting: "If he had jumped like he did on Monday he would have won a few more for sure.

"Although Maitland was his first race for several weeks, Mickey Doo has been ready to go for a while.

"I had him set to return to racing at Goulburn but my property at Brandy Hill in the Hunter Valley got flooded in so we could not reach the track there.

"Then a couple of Maitland meetings were washed out as well.

"Now I'll take Mickey Doo back to Maitland for a 400m and a 450m race and then head to Wentworth Park again.

"The National Sprint Championship series is coming up so I'm aiming Mickey Doo for the final at Wenty on August 27.''

Jack ROY trained Extreme Chance to win 48 races and on Friday will take four of her offspring - from two different litters - to Wagga for two heats of the inaugural Southern Stars.

The Wallandbeen (Cootamundra) trainer has Choice Chance and Bonnie's Chance in boxes one and four in heat one and Reg's Chance and Logical Chance in heat two, exiting boxes one and seven.

ROY's quartet have won 69 races but the trainer plumps for Reg's Chance as clearly his best prospect.

"He has won 16 out of 24, is ideally drawn and is the quickest of my four,'' ROY said.

"His litter sister Bonnie's Chance was a good thing beaten at Temora last week but she has drawn box four and is a wide runner.

"Choice Chance and Logical Chance are from Extreme Chance's previous litter, with Choice Chance, who has also drawn the rails, the better hope of that pair.''

Victorian trainer Kayla Cottrell, who won the $40,000 New Sensation final at Wentworth Park in April with Devine Empress, is bringing Robbie Rotten to Wagga for the Southern Stars.

Her father Dave Knocker, also a successful trainer in Victoria, said: "Robbie Rotten has not raced or trialled at Wagga but is well drawn out in box seven in heat one and is going well.

"He knows his way around Goulburn because he has raced there but we figured the Wagga heats might be easier and looking at the fields that's how it seems to have panned out.''

Robbie Rotten has won 16 races but according to keen judges the dog to beat in the Wagga series could be Paua Of BUDDY, who has won 11 of 16 starts for David Jones.

Paua Of BUDDY, who has box four in heat two, is trained at Wagga but has done all his racing in Victoria.
