More Ideal For Jackey This Around

By Jeff Collerson
Jackey Moon had a far from satisfactory preparation before his second placing at Wentworth Park last week and a more settled lead-up over the past six days gives him a chance to atone in Wednesday night's second heat of the 720m Ladbrokes Easy Form Stakes.

Last Wednesday Jackey Moon led in the middle stages before finishing second, beaten four lengths, by Stagger Out Lee in 42.35 in a similar 720m grade at Wentworth Park.

He has box four in a six-dog field on Wednesday and trainer Anne Foley believes he can improve on last week's effort.

"I live at South Maitland and one night at 11 o'clock I got a knock on the door from the authorities advising me to evacuate due to potential flooding,'' Foley said.

"My family and I along with four greyhounds had to get out and stay elsewhere with that relocation lasting four days.

"Being taken from his kennel late at night and put into strange surroundings for that length of time was hardly the ideal preparation for Jackey Moon before last Wednesday's race.

"At his first Wentworth Park 720m race he clocked 43.02 and he got down to 42.66 last week and while he can't go a lot quicker, I think he can get down to 42.50 or maybe 42.40.

"Jackey Moon is not a fast dog but he is honest and is still getting the hang of 720m racing at Wenty.

"Because last week he was having only his second run going through the pen he might have taken his foot off the pedal for a few strides before coming again.''

Fantastic Luna and Believe So, both new to the Wentworth Park 720m trip, will be favoured to beat Jackey Moon after filling the quinella over 630m at Nowra on July 11 but Jackey Moon's experience over the long Wenty trip could give him the edge.

Wednesday night's 520m Ladbrokes Masters Stakes looks a match between You Know Why, who has box four, and Elanda Bale in box six.

You Know Why is the winner of five races over the WP 520m trip while Elanda Bale led all the way in a nippy 30.26 there on July 6.

Their six rivals have competed in 60 races at headquarters without a single success so You Know Why and Elanda Bale look well graded.

Luke Azzopardi, whose son Peter trains You Know Why said: "She only has to stay out of trouble for the 20 metres to win this.

"When she finished sixth in a harder race last Wednesday she collided heavily with another dog in the early stages.

"But You Know Why had won her two previous races, over 401m at Richmond, in really good style.

"And she is capable of beginning a lot better than she did last week.''

Elanda Bale gave Grenfell trainer Faye Herbert her first city winner when she won at Wentworth Park on July 6 but she has not raced since.

Herbert said: "She often pulls up with a couple of little niggling injuries, nothing serious, but it means I restrict Elanda Bale's racing to no more than once a fortnight.

"She has not raced or trialled since her Wenty win but she is fit because I have two straight tracks at home and she is kept in trim by galloping there.''

Elanda Bale posted a quick first split of 5.45 when she won on July 6 but might need to reproduce those figures if she is to get across to the rails from box six.

Wednesday's best bet should be the John Finn-trained Zipping Stefan, who has box one in the Thanks DEAN, KARL & Bec Stakes, a 520m fifth grade.

Zipping Stefan bungled the start when a strong finishing fourth from box three at WP last Saturday night and when he drew box one for the first time, at Wenty on July 6, he was checked off a rival's heels at the first turn before running on well to beat all but Bandit Jane, a winner of three races at the track.
