Pearl Set To Be A Southern Star

By Jeff Collerson
Australia’s best sprinter She's A Pearl, sidelined for a month with a seasonal condition, will be back in time to tackle GRNSW's inaugural Southern Stars series.

Three heats will be held over 457m Temora on July 17, three over 440m at Goulburn on July 22 with two 400m heats at Wagga on the same date.

The eight heat winners will qualify for the 440m $50,000 to the winner final at Goulburn on July 29.

"She's A Pearl is probably four weeks away from racing again so the timing is right for the Southern Stars,'' trainer Jodie Lord.

She's A Pearl this year became the first greyhound to win the Ladbrokes Golden Easter Egg/TAB Million Dollar Chase double and has won 17 of her past 18 Wentworth Park 520m races, remaining unbeaten in her dozen latest appearances at headquarters.

Unidentified gave Verges Creek (Kempsey) trainer Leeanne WALKER her first Saturday night Wentworth Park winner, and her second at headquarters, when he took out a 520m fifth grade at the weekend.

WALKER, who has held a trainer's licence for five years, bought Unidentified for just $6000 after the dog had won a maiden race at Wentworth Park in November.

Her partner, fellow trainer Nathan Goodwin explained: "Unidentified was put up for sale after his maiden win and a client of mine, Richard Butler, bought him.

"Soon after Richard decided to sell the dog and Leanne was able to secure him for $6000.

"Unidentified has been a great buy because he gave Leanne her first Wentworth Park winner when he won on a Wednesday night in April and has now won again for her at a higher ranked Saturday night meeting there.''

Cumbria Days has joined his litter brothers and sisters in finally putting it all together by posting his fastest time at Wentworth Park with a runaway 30.05sec performance in a 520m fifth grade on Saturday.

Trainer Steve Fitch said: "My bitch Hill Top Belle's 2018 litter to Barcia Bale hit their straps immediately but this litter, whelped in March, 2020 to Fernando Bale, have taken their time to come good.

"Now eight of the 10 pups from the litter have won races, and Cumbria Days has turned into a real nice dog.''

Craig Watts' first greyhound Chase The Cash earned $76,000 and won 18 races, including victories over both the 520m and 720m journeys at Wentworth Park.

Now Chase The Cash is proving a breeding barn goldmine for Watts, with her son Chasing Fernando notching his sixth Wentworth Park win on Saturday night.

Chasing Fernando, owned and trained by Watts at suburban Werrington, led throughout in a slick 29.93, lifting his prizemoney to nearly $52,000.
