French Martini and Sunnyside Boy Ready For Robert Smith Memorial

ADAM Brandt's first greyhound Adam Meway won 20 races and qualified for six group race finals but the latest acquisitions for the Newcastle owner have launched their careers in even more spectacular fashion.

In last week's heats of the inaugural Multicam Robert Smith Memorial Maiden at LADBROKES GARDENS, Brandt's pair French Martini and Sunnyside Boy set the track alight for dual Million Dollar Chase winning trainer Peter Lagogiane.

French Martini, a 22 month old daughter of Aston Dee Bee and Sheez My Chicki, made a stunning debut to win her 515m heat in 29.22, unheard of figures for a newcomer.

That time was a mere .06sec outside the course record set in July, 2018, by Zipping Bailey, who went on to score an extraordindary last-to-first victory in the 2019 Group 1 Golden Easter Egg at Wentworth Park.

French Martini's litter brother Sunnyside Boy was almost as impressive, winning his heat in a flying 29.41.

In Friday's $20,000 to the winner final, French Martini will exit box seven while Sunnyside Boy has drawn three.

And Adam Brandt says Breakwall, an unraced third member of the litter being trained by Lagogiane is in the same class as his Smith Memorial heat winners.

"When these youngsters were broken in by John Martin in the NSW Northern Rivers, they were the fastest in their group being educated at the time, with French Martini the quickest, followed by Breakwall and then Sunnyside Boy,'' Brandt said.

Adam Meway, who was trained by Anthony Azzopardi, got Brandt's dabble in greyhound racing off to a flying start when he finished third to Radley Bale in the 2011 Golden Easter Egg at Wentworth Park.

When Adam Meway drew box four in the Easter Egg final a massive cheer squad comprising Brandt's family and friends bathed Wentworth Park in a sea of blue with each wearing T-shirts to match the dog's rug colour.

Then, when Brandt's then eight year old son Reece recovered from a serious illness after being hospitalised for three months, he chose to have his own greyhound in preference to a dream trip to Disneyland.

Reece's gift puppy raced as Lock Master, and after winning first up at Wentworth Park he was fastest qualifier for last year's Group 3 Magic Maiden final at headquarters, which was won by Bandit Ned.

Lock Master has won eight races so when Adam Brandt decided to invest in more greyhounds it was a "no brainer" that he return to the property of that dog's breeders Michelle and Mick Jones.

"Michelle and Mick had bred a litter by Aston Dee Bee from Sheez My Chicki, the mother of Lock Master and a stack of other good greyhounds such as Ice Cream Story, so I picked three out when they were 12 weeks old,'' Brandt said.

"They are the trio racing as French Martini and her brothers Breakwall and Sunnyside Boy.''
