Vale Des Gilroy

By Jeff Collerson
Northern Rivers trainer Des Gilroy has passed away after a long battle with cancer.

Gilroy, who was 72, won races at Wentworth Park in 2003 with Tahitian Rose and in 2005 with Dad's Pleasure, and was from a famous greyhound racing family.

His uncle Geoff Gilroy was a leading south coast trainer in the 1960s and 70s while his father Eric Gilroy trained the champion sprinter How Black.

Gilroy's close friend, former Gosford club secretary and now successful south coast trainer Kevin Keys, said: "Des moved to Murwillumbah around 17 years where he continued training greyhounds.

"He is survived by his partner Christi.''

Des Gilroy will have a private cremation.

Greyhound Racing NSW wishes to extend its condolences to the Gilroy family and his friends.
