Hunter Earns A Crack At Bulli Cup

Fernando Hunter (pictured) will tackle Sunday's heats of the group two Bulli Gold Cup following his dazzling best time of the night performance at Wentworth Park on Saturday.

Trained by Darryl Thomas for crack jockey Brenton Avdulla, Fernando Hunter came from fourth early to win a 520m fourth and fifth grade by nine lengths in 29.56, .04sec quicker than his previous best Wentworth Park time.

After the race Thomas said: "The Golden Easter Egg at Wentworth Park has always been his goal but this win has earned him a crack at the Bulli Cup.

"Fernando Hunter has finally adapted to Wentworth Park and is using his head, taking runs when they present themselves.

"But as good as he is going at Wenty, I still consider him a better one turn track dog than a two turn greyhound.

"His brilliant Maitland form shows that so while he has not seen Bulli that track should suit him so I am going to have to give him his chance in Sunday's Cup heats.''

Bandit Ned, who notched his eighth Wentworth Park win in 11 appearances on Saturday night, is also a Bulli Gold Cup candidate.

The Jodie Lord-trained Bandit Ned overcame a moderate start in Saturday's Free-For-All to win by two lengths in 29.64, comfortably holding off a late surge by outsider Special Blend and giving the talented Fantastic Raven and Dapto Megastar winner Ritza Donna a start and a beating.

Bandit Ned again showed his liking for wide draws as Saturday's win from box eight took his tally from the two outside boxes to eight wins from 10 exits.

Jodie Lord landed a winning double on Saturday with her up-and-coming youngster What About That running away with a 520m fifth grade in 30.02.

Sunburnt Highway, who turns six in August and who established a Wentworth Park 520m win record of 35 victories on January 22, went further ahead in the Wenty win ladder with a four lengths winning romp in Saturday's Masters race.

Owned by Northern Rivers breeder Gary Cluss and trainer Judith Richardson, Sunburnt Highway reeled off the 520m in 29.80, his fastest time at Wentworth Park since he clocked 29.65 in finishing second to Ritza Donald 11 months ago.

"Gary Cluss not only bred Sunburnt Highway but he reared the dog until he was eight months old,'' Judith Richardson said later.

"We share ownership of this wonderful dog and there are no plans to retire him because he loves racing and after tonight's win wasn't even puffing.''

Owen Langley landed his first Wentworth Park winner for the year when Black Firebrand, a new addition to his kennels, worked his way through the field from fourth early to win a 520m fifth grade in 29.97.

"Until recently Black Firebrand had been trained by his owner Mark Moroney but when Mark moved from Doyalson to Grafton he found he had only four kennels,'' Langley said.

"We have known each other for 20 years so he asked me to take Black Firebrand.

"The dog has taken a little while to settle in and I believe he can go faster than he went tonight and might even get down to 29.70 at Wentworth Park.''

Another greyhound to post his personal best Wentworth Park time on Saturday was the Allan Ivers-trained Redeem Our Cash, who began brilliantly to lead throughout in a 520m fifth grade in 29.91.

For Redeem Our Cash, arguably Wenty's most under-rated sprinter, it was his fourth successive win at headquarters.
