Siblings Still Running Around Together

By Michael Cowley
It’s not a rarity in greyhound racing to have siblings match motors on the racetrack. It quite often happens in maiden races when a litter is broken in and ready to race around the same time. Also, many trainers target rich maiden events with a handful of brothers and sisters from the same litter.

And it’s not unusual that good bloodlines often see siblings race together at a higher level, with some notable examples in recent times being sibling stayers Poco Dorado, Blue Moon Rising and Veloce Nero and elite NSW sprinters and brothers Feral Franky and Good Odds Harada.

But it was a bit different at LADBROKES GARDENS on Wednesday when three siblings raced against each other at the spritely age of five years and nine months.

The trio by Able Seaman out of Crystal Halo, were the Lisa Hutton-trained pair Pick A Whacker and Sailor Boy, and Son Of Gus trained by Robert Groizard Jnr whose mother Patricia bred the litter.

Sailor Boy has had the most successful career so far with 22 wins 23 seconds and 30 thirds from 150 starts. Pick A Whacker has raced 158 times for 15 wins, 23 seconds and 21 thirds, while Son Of Gus has only had 90 starts for 12 wins, 8 seconds and 20 thirds.

The trio are the last three of litter - which were whelped on Anzac Day in 2016 - still racing.

While none of them got the money on Wednesday, litter bragging rights went to Sailor Boy who finished ahead of his two brothers.
