Yuko On Track To Target Futurity

By Jeff Collerson
Yuko Girl will exit box one for the first time in Saturday night's Happy New Year final at Wentworth Park but should only need to step away cleanly to lead throughout.

The Sam Sultana-trained bitch made a stunning Wentworth Park debut in leading all the way to win her heat from box five, covering the 520m in 29.81sec.

None of her rivals on Saturday night broke the 30sec barrier and while Coco Model's first split of 5.40 was superior to Yuko Girl's 5.47, Sultana's greyhound posted a sizzling second section of 13.80, well inside Coco Model's 13.91 and Devil Dodger's 13.97.

Another impressive win by Yuko Girl should earn her a place in the heats of the group 1 National Futurity bitches' classic at Wentworth Park on January 14, where the race record for the final stands at 29.74, recorded by Victoria's Striker Light in 2017.

Heats of the group 1 National Derby, the age classic for dogs, will also be held on January 14 and on Saturday Mark Wilcox's Castle Warrior should enhance his claims for that race by winning the 520m Roosters Traffic Control Stakes.

Like Yuko Girl, Castle Warrior, who will be chasing his 10th win from 19 starts, made an impressive initial Wentworth Park appearance on December 18.

Despite dwelling at the start, Castle Warrior charged down the outside from box eight to hit the front at the winning post with a lap to go before scoring a runaway win in 29.97, comprising brilliant early splits of 5.39 and 13.74.

Trainer Mark Wilcox is not unduly concerned at Castle Warrior's box six draw on Saturday, saying: "He handles all boxes because he runs in a straight line to the first bend.

"His only flaw is that he takes a couple of hops before he takes off but he goes quick once he gets a bit of clear air.

"Castle Warrior is a pretty good railer so when the big races come along I'm hoping he can come up with an inside box.''

Wicked Flash has not won in four starts from box eight but looks positioned to break through in Saturday night's Group Racing Stakes, a 520m third and fourth grade.

Wicked Flash won in 30.02 from box six at Wentworth Park on December 15 before having no luck on the home turn when second, beaten just under a length, in 30.18 from box five a week later.

"He can go faster because in his first post-to-post hand-slip at Wenty he clocked 24.06, while he has won there in 29.85 and has clocked 29.80 while getting beaten,'' trainer Peter Ray said.

"Wicked Flash likes Wentworth Park and is coming out of the Wenty boxes better than he does at any other track.

"He is in very good form and if he keeps going like he has been I plan to give him a crack at the heats of the group 1 Paws Of Thunder at Wentworth Park on January 15.''

Hardest for Wicked Flash to beat is likely to be the Jason Magri-trained ZIPPING Demand, who has clocked 29.86 at Wentworth Park and due to his lack of early pace, will relish having only five rivals.

Reena's Rosie has been a frustrating greyhound for trainer Andrew Bell but her fast finishing third behind Spring Renegade and Simple Shearer at Wentworth Park on Wednesday indicates she could be ready to win her first Wentworth Park race.

Reena's Rosie has been placed in three of nine Wentworth Park appearances and while her best 520m time is 30.18, Bell insists she is capable of breaking 30sec in a solo trial.

"She doesn't like being pressured at the first turn and when she gets back in a field she tends to keep running into the back of the other dogs,'' Bell said.

"Funnily enough, I think she would be better off missing the kick and plopping onto the rails at the first turn and so avoiding any jostling up near the front.

"If that happens and she can hold the inside running Reena's Rosie is capable of getting home in a very strong 11.70.''
