Hardman To Unleash Magic On Gosford

By Jeff Collerson
Springview Magic is off to Gosford to trial in preparation for a tilt at the December 28 heats of the group 2 Beast Unleashed Gosford Cup following his brilliant all-the-way win at Wentworth Park on Saturday night.

Having his first start for six weeks, the Michael Hardman-trained dog made a one act affair of his 520m fifth grade, posting dazzling splits of 5.40, 13.66 and 17.77 before covering the 520m in 29.91.

That time, recorded in race nine, was second quickest of the night and was bettered only by the John Finn-trained Zipping Alabama, who won race 10 in 29.88.

Springview Magic had not won since early September and after Saturday's race Hardman explained: "Earlier in his career I rated him the fastest in my kennels but all of a sudden he couldn't find the line.

"He would show early pace but walk at the finish and was finally diagnosed with a blood disorder.

"Since I have had that corrected Springview Magic has been his old self again and I expected him to win Tonight.

"He set up a big early break and while he faded in the straight, I'm certain that was only due to lack of race fitness.''

Zipping Alabama, better known as a stayer, proved her versatility by being just behind pacemaker Sunrise Dancer on the back straight and taking the lead approaching the home turn to win over 520m, running home in a solid 11.79.

Significantly times on Saturday got quicker as the night progressed, with the track surface becoming faster after being on the slow side for the early portion of the card.

In race two, another 520m fifth grade, Smart Fernando gave Faulconbridge trainer Greg Sutherland his first WP winner when he grabbed pacemaker Asiram in the last stride to win by a half head in a tidy 30.18.

Sutherland, a hobby trainer who runs a Blue Mountains gift shop with his wife, has only Smart Fernando in training.

After the race a jubilant Sutherland said: "I bought Smart Fernando from his breeder Eddie Foyle for $6000 at six months of age.

"Tonight's win takes his earnings to $52,000 as this was the dog's 14th win.

"It's all a bonus as Smart Fernando had to be broken in twice because he did not look set for a bright future when he was originally educated.''

Trainer Owen Langley feared he may have to scratch his runners on Saturday night after the transmission on his car "blew up" on Saturday morning but Brendan Anthes, one of his owners, came to the rescue and transported the Berkshire Park trainer and his dogs to WP.

Langley took out training honours for the meeting, winning with Arctic Kingdom, who led throughout in a fourth and fifth grade in 30.10 and with Pazienza, owned by Anthes, in 30.50.

Anthes said: "I train guard dogs for a living so have a work van which was big enough to take Owen's dogs to the track Tonight.''

Langley added: "Arctic Kingdom is not the quickest around but is a good, honest dog with plenty of early pace and that wins races.

"Pazienza was beaten in nine provincial races when WP was in lockdown and wasn't racing, but I always felt he would be better suited at Wenty than at tracks like Richmond, which is a tougher run and where the dog struggled to finish strongly.''

Zipping Maserati scored his 10th win in 15 starts when he bolted away in 30.05 at his WP debut on Saturday and in doing so earned a crack at the group 1 National Derby heats on January 14.

After the race trainer Jason Mackay said: "I was happy with his run Tonight because while Zipping Maserati had a couple of looks at WP he had not previously been out of the starting boxes.

"He has nailed the start at his past couple of races but while this dog has a motor, he needs to become consistent at box rise if he is going to reach the top.''
