Red Suits Chasing Fernando

By Jeff Collerson
Chasing Fernando was a close to being a best time of the night winner from box eight at Wentworth Park last Wednesday but trainer Craig Watts is happy seeing his charge in box one on Wednesday night.

Chasing Fernando (pictured) will wear the red rug in race five, a 520m fifth grade, and Watts believes his greyhound is capable of improving on last week's all-the-way win in 30.15, .09sec outside the meeting's fastest figures.

"He likes to get across to the rails so I'm pleased having him in box one so long as he gets away okay,'' Watts said.

"And Chasing Fernando should keep improving as last Wednesday's race was only his second try at 520m.

"Just before last week I had trialled him over 520m at Wentworth Park and he clocked 30.40-something so he improved quite a bit in his race.''

Chasing Fernando looks to have a good draw on Wednesday as Tap Out Diesel, drawn in box two, is a wide runner.

Another box one greyhound with the "luxury'' of a wide runner outside him is the Frank Hurst-trained Ties That Bind in the opening event, another 520m fifth grade.

Ties That Bind had box three and used plenty of the track with a strong finishing 30.22 win at his Wentworth Park and 520m debut last Wednesday.

But the 21-months old juvenile, who is unbeaten in three starts, should make full use of his inside alley this week as Getaway Man, box two, races wide.

Hurst has bright prospects of landing a double with his Million Dollar Chase winning warrior Good Odds Harada expected to take out Wednesday's Ladbrokes Cash In Masters Stakes, 520m.

If he scores his 37th win, Good Odds Harada will take his earnings to $1,337,025, within striking distance of the Australian record of $1,365,175 held by the late Paul Wheeler's former all distance champion Fanta Bale.

Hurst said: "If Good Odds Harada can break that record he will be retired.

"But I'm in no hurry for him to finish his racing days as Good Odds Harada enjoys racing, he loves going to the track.''

Spiced Rum finished seventh but might have been a good thing beaten at his Wentworth Park debut and should notch his third win in five starts in Wednesday's Free Entry Saturday Stakes, a 520m fifth grade.

Last Wednesday Spiced Rum went fast along the rails to be within a few lengths of the leader when he ran into a "dead-end" and almost fell.

Trainer Darryl Thomas is confident the dog can break through on Wednesday.

"I think he was going to win last week because I know how he can get home at the end of 520m, Spiced Rum is as strong as a bull,'' Thomas said.

"Before last week's race I gave him a post-to-post hand-slip at Wentworth Park and he clocked the handy time of 24.20, but his run home was just sensational at 11.40sec.

"If Spiced Rum gets a crack at them on Wednesday I believe he is capable of blowing them away.''

Another unlucky runner from last Wednesday who can make amends this week is Miss Wanted, who has box three in the WP Markets Saturday Stakes, a 520m fourth and fifth grade.

Miss Wanted had won each of two Wentworth Park appearances before finishing third last week, when she was badly checked at the first turn by a wide runner.

Patrick Mulrine, whose mother Kim trains Miss Wanted, said: "We were rapt in her run last week because little bitches often throw in the towel when they suffer severe interference like she did.

"But Miss Wanted is a good little Chaser and has taken a liking to Wentworth Park.

"In her first slip at Wenty she clocked 24.20 while she recorded 29.96 in her first 520m trial there.

"Miss Wanted looks nicely drawn close to the rails on Wednesday.''
