Phillip's Prayers Answered

By Jeff Collerson
Little Prayer's runaway win in good time on a heavy track at Wentworth Park on Saturday night was in sharp contrast to her disappointing trial there four nights earlier.

Little Prayer, who went into Saturday's 520m fifth grade with a win and four placings from five provincial starts, railed to the lead going through the pen and after being second on the back straight, bolted away to score by six lengths.

"The track was a bog yet she still ran 30.24 but I didn't back her because of her slow trial at Wenty last Tuesday,'' trainer Phillip Cini said.

"On Tuesday she clocked 30.73 and her sections were poor, 5.66, 14.36 and 18.65, which is walking, with an ordinary run home on 12.08.

"I did expect Little Prayer to improve a couple of tenths with the run on the track but certainly didn't think she could chop so much off her trial time, running home in 11.71.

"I'm convinced Little Prayer, who does not turn two until January, is going to develop into a top class stayer.

"And her litter brother Archie's Prayer, who has not raced yet, is much quicker than his sister.

"Little Prayer and Archie's Prayer are owned by John Sawyer who raced their dam Mother's Prayer.

"When she finished racing John did not want to breed from her so sent her to a Victorian breeder and she whelped a litter to Fernando Bale.

"Under the deal John was to receive two pups and Little Prayer and Archie's Prayer are the two he received.

"Then he got a call from the Victorian breeder who said he no longer wanted Mother's Prayer, and when John asked me if I wanted her, I jumped at the chance.

"Mother's Prayer is due to whelp her second litter, to Tommy Shelby, on October 13.''

Zipping Nebraska, who had won each of two Wentworth Park 720m starts before flashing home to go down by a half length to Ice Cream Story over the same course on Saturday night, has been sold and will do her future racing in South Australia.

"She is off to SA this week,'' said Melinda Finn, whose husband John trained Zipping Nebraska for her Wentworth Park successes.

Cop Magnet, who took his earnings to nearly $40,000 with his 13th win on Saturday night at Wentworth Park, is a son of Fernando Bale and Champion Model, a brood bitch who will be strongly represented in Wednesday night's GRNSW Maiden Series heats.

Champion Model's offspring by Barcia Bale, whelped in February last year, will contest the three 520m heats.

Each of the six youngsters are unraced and are trained by Jodie Lord for their owner-breeder Clay Mullens.

Cartel Master and Coco Model will exit boxes two and eight in heat one, Club Model and Cayenne Model have boxes two and six respectively in heat two, while Chair Man (box one) and Clay Made (box two) will tackle heat three.
