Will Takes Time Off Study to Get His First Winner

You would expect that doing a double degree at University would have a significant impact on how much spare time you have available, but during his, Will Griffiths trains greyhounds.

And on Thursday at Casino, the 20-year-old celebrated his first winner when Liar Teller took out a 4th and 5th grade event over the 300m.

Liar Teller was also Will’s first runner back in late March this year, and it was starter number 47 for him that broke his maiden training status on Thursday, after a run 10 minor placings with his small team.

“It’s taken 40-odd starts with the four dogs I have had, and I was thinking is it ever going to happen?” Will said. “I’ve had a fair few placings, and a bit of bad luck here and there, but she has been knocking on the door for a win, and she finally got a good run and got the win.”

Will’s uncle is Casino trainer Doug King, and it was Through Doug that he became involved in greyhounds.

“I would go to his place and see the dogs and then I started going to the Casino track and really enjoyed it, and thought I’d get a few of my own,” Will explained.

Through my uncle I met the Northfields, and they have been very helpful with me, and I actually got Liar Teller from Charlie Northfield.”

It might have looked like he would need to wait for that first winner when Liar Teller was slow to move from the one box on Thursday, but she powered Through into third place, then railed Through to lead on the turn and scored an impressive win in 16.92s.

Yesterday was a good day,” he said.

Will lives on a house block with four kennels and for the moment, that’s enough.

“I’m a university student at the moment at QUT (Queensland University of Technology) in Brisbane,” he said.

“I’m doing a double degree in Business and Biomedical Science, doing it online at the moment due to border restrictions, so my weekdays are made up of a mix of that, and the dogs. And I’m really enjoying it.”
