A Day Michael Won't Forget

By Jeff Collerson
Hobby trainer Michael Stegnjaic had a day to remember on Saturday when he landed a winning treble on the Richmond straight track before heading to Bulli and getting within an ace of taking out the opening event.

Stegnjaic, who works in the construction industry, won at Richmond with siblings Funky Girl and Burn Rubber along with their older half sister Wind Of Change.

At Bulli Hold Me Up, a litter brother to Funky Girl and Burn Rubber, led everywhere except at the post when second, beaten a half length by boom youngster Zipping Lennox in a sizzling 26.30 over 472m.

Hold Me Up had led throughout in 26.30 over the Bulli 472m trip on August 14.

"I have been training on and off for around five years but have owned a lot of greyhounds,'' the Rouse Hill trainer said.

"I owned a greyhound called Singapore Slip who won seven races and also raced Exclusive One, who won 15 of 30 starts.

"Hold Me Up, Funky Girl and Burn Rubber came to me when I obtained their dam, Funky Punk, from her owner Jimmy Coyle on a pup deal.

"Jimmy had earlier bred pups from a litter by Spring Gun from Punk Angel that I wanted to buy but he could not sell me any because he had promised them to others.

"Later he offered to give me Funky Punk, a member of that litter I had been after, in return for some of her offspring.

"Funky Girl has won seven from 13 starts while Burn Rubber, Hold Me Up and Wind Of Change have won two apiece but there is not much between the younger Fernando Bale-Funky Punk litter whelped in June, 2019.

"When they were being educated one would go best on day, and a different one would be tops in the next trial.

"As they get older they might sort themselves out as far as ability goes but at this stage the main difference between them is their temperaments.''

The key to Good Odds Cash's brilliantly consistent recent form is that she has been nailing the start.

"Earlier she was a hit or miss beginner because she wasn't getting down in the boxes and while I'm still not sure whether she does that all the time now, I have done a lot of box work with her and it seems to be paying off,'' Frank Hurst, whose wife Tracey trains the greyhound said.

Good Odds Cash took her record to 12 wins from 20 starts when she toppled Wow in Saturday night's top grade 472m race at Bulli and at just 22 months of age has the racing world at her paws.

Meanwhile Good Odds Harada, who is closely related to Good Odds Cash, gave the Hursts a winning double on Saturday when he won a 472m Masters race in a smart 26.26.

"When he finished second at his first Masters appearance at Wentworth Park on April 21 Good Odds Harada hurt his stopper tendon,'' Frank Hurst said.

"So I threw him out in the yard, hoping to have him ready for the Masters Meteor at the Million Dollar Chase carnival.

"Of course that series has not been postponed until early next year.

"Good Odds Harada got a bit tired in the run home at Bulli on Saturday night but as it was his first race in over four months that was to be expected.''
