Wow Brilliant, Now Back To Bulli

By Jeff Collerson
Wow pulled up in mint condition after his dazzling Bulli return on Wednesday and is raring to go again at the same venue in Saturday night's Ladbrokes It Free-For-All.

On Wednesday Wow began cleanly and led throughout from box six to cover the 472m trip in a brilliant 26.04, a mere .07sec outside his personal best Bulli figures of 25.97.

"He was fine after Wednesday's race and the next morning went for a gallop down to the dam and back on our property,” said Ruth Matic, whose daughter Danielle trains Wow.

"Saturday's race looks a bit tougher than Wednesday's field so it would be nice if Wow could come out as well as he did then.

"He has box four and there is a lot of pace drawn around him, especially with Lilly Banner and Good Odds Cash boxed in two and three.

"But Wednesday night was the first time Wow had raced at Bulli for nearly a year so he should derive some benefit from that run.''

Stanley Road, widely considered Australia's best stayer, resumes on Saturday night after a break of just over three months.

The crack long-distance performer, who has won 15 of 33 races, returns from box one in the 590m GRNSW Middle Distance Series Stakes.

Trainer Mark Gatt said: "Stanley Road is going as well as ever according to how he has been trialling.

"Obviously the 590m trip is a bit short for him but I expect him to be hitting the line hard and having box one is a bonus.''

Hardest for Stanley Road to beat look to be Super Estrella, a winner of two from three Bulli 590m races, and Explosive Venom, chasing her fifth successive win.

Super Estrella clocked 33.00sec at Bulli on July 31 and none of her rivals has come close to those figures but Explosive Venom's trainer Daniel Flanagan is upbeat about his greyhound's prospects.

"If Explosive Venom begins like I know she can, she will run a great race,'' Flanagan said.

"Four runs back she won over 515m at LADBROKES GARDENS in 29.29, just outside the course record, and that was after the track after been harrowed a few days earlier.''

Flanagan also has Nitroglycerine in box one in Saturday's 400m Ladbrokes Easy Form Stakes, which looks a match between that dog and Aston Barak, who stormed home to win in a slick 22.47 over the same course on Wednesday.

"Nitroglycerine is having his first 400m race at Bulli but he goes well on this track and is well boxed,'' Flanagan said.

Saturday's best bet should be Ebby Jet Power, who has box one in the Ladbrokes Same Race Multi Free-For-All over 400m.

Ebby Jet Power has won 10 of his 19 starts from boxes one and two and as a winner of 26 races looks a class above his opposition.

From four Bulli 400m appearances Ebby Jet Power has recorded two wins and two seconds and was a good third to Zulu Warlord in a far tougher race at Dapto at his most recent outing last Saturday night.

Trainer Donna Campbell has three runners at Bulli on Saturday but rates Under The Thumb, who has box five in the 400m Bulli Racing This Wednesday Stakes as her best chance.

"If Under The Thumb nails the start I think he will win,'' Campbell said.

"He has been jumping better lately and this looks a suitable race for him.''

An interesting sidelight to Saturday's card is the return to racing of Good Odds Harada, winner of the 2019 TAB Million Dollar Chase.

Good Odds Harada has been off the scene since April but should be too good for his five opponents when he makes his debut as a veteran in the 472m Ladbrokes Split Multi Masters Stakes.
