Lilly Turns Back Time

By Jeff Collerson
Lilly Banner turned back the clock more than 12 months with her win in Saturday night's 400m Free-For-All at Bulli, replicating her victory in the group 1 Peter Mosman Opal at Wentworth Park.

On July 11 last year Lilly Banner exploded from box seven and led throughout to win the 520m Opal final by more than eight lengths in a slick 29.75, posting sizzling initial splits of 5.39 and 13.75.

At Bulli on Saturday she landed clear of the field when the lids lifted, rocketing out of box four and leading all the way to win the 400m top grade by three lengths in 22.22, fastest time of the night.

Less than an hour earlier Lilly Banner's kennelmate Chrissie Banner did exactly the same thing, jumping in front and after holding a 10 lengths' break in the middle stages, winning a top grade 590m event by seven lengths in 33.25.

Those figures were just .26sec outside Segovia's long-standing track record, giving the two bitches' trainer Barry Gibbons a winning double.

Sharing training honours at Bulli was David Smith, who took out the opening two events with litter brothers Rodeo Ethics and Outlaw Ethics.

Rodeo Ethics led throughout to win a 472m fifth grade in 26.30sec while his sibling Outlaw Ethics began only fairly before sweeping around the field to lead at the first turn, winning by six lengths in 26.39.

Rodeo Ethics shared quickest 472m figures at Bulli with the Michael Stegnjaic-prepared Hold Me Up, who wasn't headed winning another 472m fifth grade by four lengths in 26.30.

In July, 2017, the Ray Webster-trained Lagoon Jazzy missed winning the Wentworth Park Golden Easter Egg by a half head, losing out to Victoria's Striker Light.

On Saturday Lagoon Jazzy's son Lagoon Samuel wasn't headed in landing a 400m fifth grade in his personal best Bulli figures of 22.47.

"Lagoon Samuel is not in the same class as his mother, he is no super star but just a good dog,'' Webster said later.

"I will now build him up to 520m racing at Dapto, beginning by sending him over 440m at Goulburn.''

Trainer Chris Carl put Zipping Miami's improved form down to the innovation of racing him in blinkers after the dog won a 400m fifth grade on Saturday.

Zipping Miami was earning the reputation of being wayward until Carl recently decided to race the dog in blinkers.

"Since he has had the blinkers on Zipping Miami has raced truly and with them he has had two wins and a second from four starts,'' Carl said.

Miss Ezmae has broken or equalled three track records in the past month and on Saturday night at Bulli it was the turn of her litter sister Ziggy Star to shine.

"She is following in the footsteps of her sister,'' Ziggy Star's trainer Peter Lagogiane quipped after his bitch led throughout to win Saturday's feature 515m race in a nippy 28.79.

Ziggy Star, who had scored two wins and two seconds from her previous five starts, jumped smartly from box two and defeated noted strong finishers Insane Fury and Romantic Storm by two lengths.

"She has both early speed and strength at the finish, so with those attributes she only needs to add consistently good starts to win plenty of races.''
