Extra Distance No Problem For Chrissie Banner

By Jeff Collerson
Chrissie Banner's run home time when she won over 535m at Richmond last Saturday surpassed the figures posted by prolific winners Zipping Kyrgios and Good Odd Cash so trainer Barry Gibbons has stepped her up to 590m for Saturday night's Ladbrokes Split Multi Stakes at Bulli.

Last week Chrissie Banner was the only winner to break 15sec running home, clocking 14.85, indicating she will cope with the additional distance on Saturday.

Before last Saturday's race Gibbons said he believed Chrissie Banner was better suited to a two turn track like Richmond than a one turn course such as Bulli but from box one she looks set to lead her rivals a merry dance on Saturday.

Definite danger looms as Trunkey Rose, who faded out of a place when fifth over 618m at Richmond on Saturday but who made the pace when second to Sound Of Silence over the Bulli 590m trip on July 28.

Sound Of Silence proved the form by winning easily over 717m at Richmond on Saturday and while Chrissie Banner is ideally placed in box one, Trunkey Rose relishes wide draws and has box eight.

From seven appearances exiting the two outside traps Trunkey Rose has won four races.

Outlaw Ethics led all the way from box three to win over 472m at Bulli on August 4 in a fast 26.22 but trainer David Smith considers the dog better placed in seven in Saturday's Mr Bugs Pest Control Stakes over the same course.

"He loves it out wide, when Outlaw Ethics draws inside he runs straight up the track,'' Smith said.

South coast trainer George Micallef nominated Insane Fury for a 472m race on Saturday night but has no qualms about seeing the dog drawn over 515m.

Insane Fury has box one in the Ladbrokes Same Race Multi Stakes wore the red rug when a slick 28.67 winner at his only outing over the Bulli 515m course.

"I entered him for a 472m race but when there was none available I was asked if I was prepared to send him over the longer distance and I readily agreed,'' trainer Micallef said.

"He has a great draw but will need to do everything right with good dogs like Ziggy Star in box two and Romantic Storm in box four up against him.''

Micallef could win a double as he has Insane Fury's litter brother Purely Virtuoso in box two in Saturday's 400m Ladbrokes Easy Form Stakes.

"I was surprised at how well Purely Virtuoso went when he led all the way from box one in 22.44 on Tuesday night at Bulli and I am pleased to see him drawn close to the rails again,'' Micallef said.

Jack Buttons, who won on debut over 535m at Richmond last Sunday, has box seven for his first Bulli start in Saturday night's 472m Ladbrokes 1-2 Wins Stakes.

"Before he raced at Richmond I trialled Jack Buttons at Bulli and he went extra well,'' trainer Luke Azzopardi said.

"He had box three when he won at Richmond but while I don't think his wide draw on Saturday night will worry him he might have his work cut out beating Tony Pagano's dog Lucky To Race.

"He has won two from four at Bulli and goes good.''

Lightning Owl, who has been placed behind classy greyhounds at his past three Bulli starts, drops slightly in class in Saturday night's Keep Safe NSW Stakes, 472m.

"He is going well and has a good chance although he has box two and I do think Lightning Owl goes best from outside draws,'' trainer Neville Brown said.
