Opal Beckons For Miss Ezmae

By Jeff Collerson
Miss Ezmae looked a worthy candidate for next month's Group 1 Peter Mosman Opal when she made light of a tricky draw to win by eight lengths in the fastest time of the meeting at Wentworth Park on Saturday night.

The Dubbo Miller Memorial winner was the first leg of a winning treble for FORBES training maestro Jack Smith, beginning brilliantly from box seven to post a slick first splt of 5.45 and running home in a strong 11.73, stopping the clock after 520m at 29.67.

Before the race Smith said: "Miss Ezmae is only just learning how to handle wide boxes, so hopefully she can jump in front.''

She did just that, easily outpacing Sizzle Fly, who had recorded a near record 18.57 over 330m at Richmond 72 hours earlier.

Smith also won with Midnight Flash, who overcame a poor box six draw to get up in the last stride in 30.22, and Dip It In, who wasn't headed winning in 30.11.

Midnight Flash is only racing until she comes in season, when she will be mated with Smith's former champion Feral Franky.

Brian Jaggers, owner of Dip It In, said later: "He has been racing without luck, running into the back of dogs, and I thought he was drawn okay in box five and only needed to begin cleanly.

"And Dip It In just loves Wentworth Park, where he has now won six from 13 starts.''

Ebby Jet Power recorded his 14th Wentworth Park win when he took out Saturday night's Free-For-All for Michael Eberand in 29.97.

Second fastest time of the meeting on Saturday was recorded by Collecting Model, who scored her third win in six days when she led all the way in 29.90.

Collecting Model, trained by Andrew Bell, had won over 400m at Richmond last Sunday before leading throughout in identical time of 29.90 at Wentworth Park on Wednesday night.

JODIE Lord-trained Picture Frame led throughout in a fourth grade sprint in 29.93, giving her trainer a winning double.

Lord had won earlier with Short Ticket, who led throughout in 29.94 for her second win in three WP outings.

Hudson Road, described as a "nervy'' dog by trainer Mark Gatt's brother Daniel Gatt, scored his third win in seven Wentworth Park appearances, romping home by six lengths in 29.95.

"That was his best performance,'' Daniel Gatt, who handled the dog, said later.

"Hudson Road plays up when he is kenneled and is close to being 'over the top' all the time.

"That's why we no longer submit him to the pre-race stir-up, he seems to settle down better without that.''

Trainer Ashley Dwyer was surprised at the generous price on offer about Special Blend, who won on Saturday night in 30.34 after trialling 29.90 at Wentworth Park.

"When the dog in box three was scratched, I thought Special Blend was close to a certainty from box two,'' Dwyer said.

"I rated Special Blend a $2.30 chance so was pleasantly surprised and backed him when I got $3.60 about his prospects.

"I made no secret of the fact that Special Blend had clocked 29.90 in a trial at Wenty last week.

"He didn't run up to that time tonight but that's because so far in his races at Wentworth Park he is not showing the speed out of the boxes that he displays on out-of-town tracks.''
