Gift That Keeps Giving

By Jeff Collerson
Stop The Shine, who clocked far and away her fastest Wentworth Park time with her 29.94 winning romp on Saturday night, was a gift to owner-trainer Ray Thomas from her breeder Chris Carl.

Stop The Shine is a sister to Justin King's Richmond Derby winner Incapacitated so is a valuable brood bitch of the future.

But spare a thought for Carl whose two Wentworth Park runners on Saturday, Oil And Water and Carry The One, finished second, after his partner Jody Gordon's two starters at Richmond 72 hours earlier, Sooky Lala and Reena's Rose, were also runners-up.

Carl explained: "I was desperate for a winner on Saturday night and when Oil And Water led clearly I thought she was sweet, until I noticed Loui Wonton running second on the back straight.

"Loui Wonton was the only greyhound I didn't want to have sitting behind my bitch because he is very strong and sure enough he beat Oil And Water by a head.

"I bred Stop The Shine but after she was broken in and ready to begin racing my kennels were full.

"So I gave her to another trainer but he sacked her, and then a second trainer also sent her home, because she wasn't chasing properly.

"Because I still had no space for her I asked Ray Thomas if he wanted her and he accepted.

"Ray is a good bloke and whenever I have been looking for someone to give me a hand with one of my dogs at a race meeting, like catching after a race, he is always first to put his hand up.

"After Stop The Shine won her first race for him he wanted to give me half the prizemoney but I refused, pointing out that she had been a gift and that was that.

"Only thing I asked of him was that when she is retired and goes to stud he might consider giving me one of her pups, and on Saturday night's he reminded me that was still going to happen.''

Zipping Kyrgios has a great record from outside boxes but Minnie Finn, whose husband John trains the Bob Payne Sprint winner, believes their dog will need to "do everything right'' to win Friday's Brother Fox Cup at Dubbo from box eight.

"Dubbo is not Wentworth Park and with its shorter run to the first corner than Wenty, Zipping Kyrgios is going to have to get away cleanly,'' Finn said.

"Casual Glance, the dog Zipping Kyrgios ran down to win his heat on Saturday night, is going to be awfully hard to beat.

"Casual Glance drew wide in his heat but has come up with box three in the final and with his great early speed he looks like he will be the pacemaker from that good draw.''

FORBES trainer Jack Smith has qualified with three greyhounds in Friday's Brother Fox Cup but is not confident, especially with his kennel star Jungle Deuce drawing box six.

"Jungle Deuce found trouble from an outside alley at Wentworth Park and from box four before finishing third in his heat and is stuck out there again,'' Smith said.

"Midnight Flash is flying at present but she has box five in what will probably be her final race preparation.

"I intend mating her with my old dog Feral Franky when she comes in season.

"My best boxed runner is obviously Irinka Riley, who has drawn a succession of unsuitable middle and wide boxes but has landed in box one in the final.

"That is a great draw for Irinka Riley.''

Rugby league immortal Bob Fulton, who passed away at the weekend, was once a greyhound owner.

Fulton and his grand final Manly Warringah winning team mate Peter Peters raced the aptly named Eagle Moss, who won races from the Kellyville kennels of the late, great Billy Fletcher.
