Tim Newbold To Join GRNSW

By GRNSW
Greyhound Racing NSW (GRNSW) Chief Executive Officer Tony Mestrov says he is delighted that the organisation has been able to attract another “quality professional with intimate knowledge of the industry,” with news today that Sydney’s premier racecaller Tim Newbold has accepted a role with GRNSW.

Newbold has been the voice of the sport in Sydney since securing the position with Sky Racing back in 2014, calling all of the State’s Group 1 events from Golden Easter Eggs at Wentworth Park to Megastar Finals at Dapto, and all three of the Million Dollar Chase Grand Finals. He will join GRNSW in the role of Club Operations Manager.

“In recent years at GRNSW we have gone about building a very strong team of specialists in their respective fields,” Mestrov said. “Tim Newbold is a name synonymous with our industry through his colourful and accurate race calls, but what some don’t know is that Tim began in the industry working in racing administration.

“To be able to have another quality professional with intimate knowledge of the industry join us at Greyhound Racing NSW will not only be a massive benefit to the organisation, but a tremendous result for our clubs and participants.”

In his GRNSW role Newbold will be working with Chief Operating Officer Wayne Billett in managing the race clubs around the State.

“I’ve been fortunate enough to watch NSW greyhound racing go from strength to strength in the past few years and to be given the chance to assist with that trend in the future is something I’m excited and passionate about," Newbold said.

Because of my love of race broadcasting, it was naturally an incredibly difficult decision to make to leave what is a caller’s dream job.

“Race broadcasting has always been my passion and in many ways it still is but I’ve got a young family and when this opportunity arose, it immediately appealed to me, and it was the right decision for me to make, and I’m really looking forward to the challenge of this new role.

"While some may be thinking it’s a long stretch from calling races at Wentworth Park and Dapto to a racing operations role, some people might not be aware but for about the first decade of my working life, I worked in racing administration across the thoroughbreds and greyhounds so in essence, I'm really returning to where it all started.

“I want to extend a big thank you to everyone at Sky Racing. I've been afforded some amazing opportunities in my 14½ years with the company and will forever be grateful. As I said it hasn’t been an easy decision and I’ve had a lot of conversations with those close to me but I know it's the right move.

“I’m not closing the door on race-calling forever, but it's time for a new chapter in my career and I am looking forward to working with the professional and dedicated team at GRNSW as the sport has nothing but exciting times ahead.”
