Big Race Pete Does It Again

By Jeff Collerson
One time house painter Peter Lagogiane confirmed his ranking as being one of Australia's big race specialist trainers  by taking out Saturday night's group 3 Evans & Son Jewellers Ladies Bracelet final with Pay Call in equal race record time.

Not only did Lagogiane's bitch explode from box five and lead throughout, but she rocketed over the 520m in 29.44, matching the record time posted by Jason Mackay's Zipping Willow in 2014.

For good measure Lagogiane, who has won two onf the three Million Dollar Chase finals with Mystic Riot and Handsome Prince, landed the quinella when Vicki's Queen took ground off the winner after being second all the way.

Pay Call's owner Shakeel Latimer, who also races the 2020 MDC winner Handsome Prince, said: "Peter found the dog for me and while I'm not sure where he had to go to pick him up, I know it was a 10 hour drive.''

John Finn, another big race trainer, took out Saturday's group 3 Bob Payne Sprint when Zipping Kyrgios came from fourth at the first turn and fifth on the back straight to win by a head.

Zipping Kyrgios got up in the last couple of strides to run down tearaway leader and favourite, Zulu Warlord, in 29.80, .22sec wide of the race record set by Good Odds Harada in 2019.

John Finn and wife Melinda also won the Bob Payne final 20 years ago with Winsome Dollars, who took 30.58 on a far slower surface.

After the race Michael Hardman, trainer of Zulu Warlord, paid tribute to Zipping Kyrgios' track sense.
"On the home turn my dog drifted a bit wide, as he is inclined to do, and when that happened Zipping Kyrgios switched back from the outside to the rails, and that won him the race.

"He was just too good, he is a smart dog, but I'm happy, running second is better than finishing unplaced.''

Zipping Kyrgios is raced by his breeders, Marty and Fiona Hallinan, with the western districts based owner-breeders also landing Saturday's other group 3 final, the 720m WP Gold Cup with Zipping Niseko.

Zipping Niseko trailed pacemaker Prim And Proper around the first turn but took a narrow lead with a lap to go, narrowly retaining the front spot to the home bend.

Zipping Niseko hung on gamely to win by a half length from the strong finishing Grant">SANDY Grant">Grant, trained at Canowindra by David Grant.

"If only I could get SANDY Grant to jump better,'' trainer Grant lamented after the race.

Zipping Niseko has now won six of her seven starts from box eight, and gave trainer Ray Magri a welcome return to the training ranks.

"I first took out a licence 35 years ago but only got back into the sport this year,'' Magri said later.

Unlucky runner of the Cup finalists was warm favourite Stanley Road, who came from last to finish fourth, after being checked several times.

Zipping Niseko covered the 720m in 42.34, well outside the 41.74 race record established by Victoria's Dyna Willow in 2014 and well short of the 41.90 posted by the John Finn trained Blue Moon Rising in the most recent Cup final, staged in 2019.

Saturday night's WP card was also notable for the 28th win at headquarters by Sunburnt Highway, who led throughout to win a 520m fifth grade in 29.90.

Second quickest 520m time of Saturday's meeting was the 29.65 recorded by Mark Moroney's Fire On Ice, who hit the front mid-race to win the Free-For-All by just under four lengths.
