Rushing Into The Golden Easter Egg

By Jeff Collerson
When Queenslander It's A Rush was drawn in and won a Golden Easter Egg Prelude at Wentworth Park on February 13 his trainer Justin Bowe had not contemplated nominating for the $250,000 to the winner series on April 3.

But with It's A Rush overcoming a slow start from box eight to win first-up at Wentworth Park in 29.88 and then beginning brilliantly to win by six lengths in 29.76 on Saturday night, Bowe might have to reconsider.

Trained at Clifton, a small town between TOOWOOMBA and Warwick, It's A Rush was purchased by Bowe's partner Belynda Essex after contesting just one race in Victoria.

It's A Rush's time was bettered on Saturday only by Zipping Kyrgios, who fulfilled trainer John Finn's early prediction that the dog would be at his best when drawn in box eight.

Zipping Kyrgios wore the pink vest for the first time on Saturday night and despite a moderate getaway, swept around the field to take the lead going through the catching pen and winning by six lengths.

Zipping Kyrgios, who has now won five from 10 Wentworth Park outings, stopped the clock in 29.60, fastest time of the night, while running home in a blistering 11.58.

There must not be a more under-rated greyhound than Aston Zodiac who notched her sixth Wentworth Park win in 16 appearances when she clocked 29.90 in a fourth and fifth grade.

Aston Zodiac trailed pacemaker Me Me Mia to the catching pen but zoomed around the leader to hit the front on the back straight before drawing away to win by nearly four lengths.

Despite the win trainer Geoff Grimwood has no plans to enter Aston Zodiac for Friday night's heats of the group 2 Richmond Oaks.

"She has not raced at Richmond and I don't think the track there would suit her,'' Grimwood said.

"I'll keep bringing Aston Zodiac back here because she loves Wenty Park.

"She is the perfect greyhound to train, I don't have to do anything with her between races.

"Aston Zodiac has a little free gallop at home each day and then jogs back to her kennel and on race night she is quiet as a lamb, nothing fazes her.''

Aston Zodiac's Wentworth Park tally also includes six seconds and two thirds, emphasising Grimwood's conviction of his greyhound's fondness for headquarters.

On Saturday Funky Portelli broke through for her first win in 14 Wentworth Park appearances when she scored a surprise all-the-way success in a 520m fifth grade, clocking 30.20.

After the race trainer Noelene Holloway said: "I have not had a lot of Wentworth Park starters lately but Funky Portelli's win tonight was my first here since High Expectation won on August 29 last year.

"Funky Portelli is a fairly good beginner but I was worried about box one because when she has greyhounds on her outside pressuring her going into the first turn she wants to run off.

"Fortunately she jumped so well tonight she was in front on her own and then I knew they wouldn't run her down because she is pretty strong at the end of 520m.''

Diamantina Rose has to be Sydney's most improved greyhound following her 29.89 three lengths win on Saturday night, a victory which took her Wentworth Park tally to seven wins and 25 placings from 50 starts.

Diamantina Rose, trained by Christine Proctor, has had four wins and six placings in 10 Wentworth Park outings since mid December.

Sunburnt Highway equalled 2000 Golden Easter Egg victor Stately Bird's Wentworth Park winning tally over 520m when he led throughout to score his 25th win at the track in Saturday night's Masters top grade.

The Judith Richardson trained marvel remains well short of the record number of Wentworth Park wins, recorded by Christine and Alan Proctor's 2014 Peter Mosman Classic winner Bessy Boo.

The Proctors' greyhound won 31, 520m races and three over 720m to be Wenty's "winningest'' greyhound.
