Bulli Bound Brothers Looking For Success

By Peter Davis
For Matt and Anthony Godden greyhound racing is part of their DNA.

The brothers breed and train their own progeny and it was from humble beginnings at suburban Loftus - in the Sutherland Shire’s southern reaches - where it all started.

The boys head to Bulli on Tuesday with two youngsters along with the smart Trunkey Rose and hope is in their heart.

Trunkey Rose has been quite lightly raced but she’s won eight for Matt,” Anthony Godden said.

“She ran a remarkable 22.11s over 400m there on Australia Day which was only her second start after a seasonal spell.

“From the very start, she showed high speed and the quick time at Bulli – while not far from the record – did not surprise.”

While Matt Godden does his own thing at Nowra Hill, Anthony has been based at Bargo, some 15 minutes south of Picton, for the past eight years.

“We enjoy the rural setting and the dogs thrive out here. The location is fantastic, we can get to six tracks in under 80 minutes and I’d think there’s no other place in the land that you can do that,” Godden added.

Anthony Godden’s focus at Bulli is Trunkey Bill in race four. The black dog dominated in a slick 22.21s maiden win at Bulli on January 30 and is headed for higher honours.

“We’ve stepped him up to 472m this time and he’s always shown us strength. He’s well drawn and won from box eight last time so we head down with expectation but you never know what the outcome can be.”

Trunkey Bill’s maiden winning time was exceptional yet his ‘run home’ time of 6.35s is astounding. Given age and experience, this Trunkey is going to pay a few bills!
