Ready For A Showdown In Town

By Jeff Collerson
Showdown came out "under the lids'' when he won the Julie Healey Memorial final at Bathurst on January 25 and only has to jump cleanly again to score his first city win at Wentworth Park tonight.

After his brilliant getaway from box two Showdown made a one-act affair of the 450m Julie Healey, winning by seven lengths in a fast 25.78, quickest time of the day.

The Amanda Ginn-trained Showdown began quickly at his Wentworth Park debut on December 9 and made the pace until being edged out in the last stride by King's Crown.

At his only subsequent Wentworth Park appearance 10 nights later Showdown stumbled at box rise and went down on his nose, losing all chance and failing to beat one home.

He is well positioned in box three in tonight's Men Of League Foundation Stakes, a 520m fifth grade, and when beaten in a tight photo finish at Wentworth Park nearly two months ago he exited the same draw.

Despite being unplaced in five Wentworth Park outings Dam Reckless has the draw to take out tonight's Happy 83rd Doreen Drynan Stakes, a 520m fifth grade.

"Dam Reckless has had no luck from bad boxes at Wenty and while she is nothing flash she gets her chance in this race,'' trainer Alan Proctor said.

"She is capable of showing early pace and I believe she can clock around 30.20 over 520m at Wentworth Park, which could be quick enough to win this.''

Dam Reckless has box one and has won two of her five races wearing the red rug.

Proctor's wife Christine's dog Teddy The Bear could give the family a winning double as the group 1 Ladbrokes National Derby finalist plummets to mediocre fifth grade company in tonight's Good Luck Sydney Sixers Stakes over 520m.

"Teddy The Bear is frustrating because we know how much ability he possesses yet he usually finds a way of getting beaten,'' Alan Proctor said.

"When he is on his game Teddy The Bear can run 30sec flat at Wentworth Park without any trouble and he likes a wide draw.

"So box six in this race should suit him, although he is such a funny dog I think he wants eight, the extreme outside alley.''

Zambora Lulu was sent out a $41 outsider when she toppled a strong fifth grade lineup at Wentworth Park last Wednesday but won't be anywhere near those odds when she tackles tonight's Ladbrokes Switch Stakes, a 520m fifth grade.

Zambora Lulu clocked 30.19 winning from box two last week and trainer Charlie Azzopardi is happy seeing his bitch in box seven tonight.

"She can handle a wide box no trouble and if she comes out running, which she can do, Zambora Lulu will be hard to catch,'' Azzopardi said.

"When she ran fourth from box three at her first Wentworth Park start she wasn't really prepared properly as she only had a box-to-box trial and had not been over the full 520m.''

While Zambora Lulu downed a strong fifth grade field last week tonight's opposition is equally strong.

Hardest to beat could be Light And Lily, whose trainer Jordan Tweddle put her in a heat of the group 1 Ladbrokes National Futurity for her Wentworth Park debut on January 15.

"She finished sixth, from box eight, but didn't have any luck at all in the Futurity heat and she goes into box one this time,'' Tweddle said.

"Light And Lily had been given a couple of hand-slips at Wenty before the Futurity heat but she had not been out of the 520m boxes so the experience should do her good.''

Since her sole Wentworth Park appearance Light And Lily has produced two good placings in fast times over 520m at Dapto from boxes four and eight.
