Vale - Athol Arandale

By Jeff Collerson
Athol Arandale, the father of Northern Rivers greyhounds race caller Mark Arandale, has died, aged 94.

Athol Arandale trained greyhounds for nearly 70 years, with his best performer being Borgia's Best, a prolific winner at Harold Park and Hunter Valley tracks.

Son Mark said: "Borgia's Best was outstanding but was probably a length short of being a group one greyhound.

"Dad had been gradually fading over the past year or two, but thankfully he remained sharp of mind until the end.

"He did not cease training greyhounds until 10 years ago, but ironically he was about to get back into the sport with a couple of pups I share with him, and which are being reared by Evelyn and Len Harris of Cosmic Bonus fame.''

Athol Arandale's funeral will be held at 2pm on Friday at St Marys Catholic Church, Grafton.

Greyhound Racing NSW offers its sincere condolences to Athol’s family and friends.
