Wenty Winners Now Eye Off The Group 1s

Zipping Kyrgios and Ice Cream Story ran slashing trials for Friday night's heats of the Group 1 Ladbrokes National Derby and National Futurity by overcoming early collisions to win in sizzling times at Wentworth Park on Saturday night.

Zipping Kyrgios collided with Big Gordy at the first turn but recovered quickly to be second going through the pen before hitting the front on the back straight.

He then careered away to win a 520m fifth grade in 29.75, second fastest time of the night.

In the early stages Ice Cream Story was disputing second position with Pink Lilly but after having a bumping duel with that greyhound set out after tearaway leader Weblec Pearl and got up to win by a nose in 29.84.

Ice Cream Story's trainer David Smith also won with Super Estrella, who began brilliantly for an all the way win in 29.76.

"Ice Cream Story and Super Estrella will both be in Friday's National Futurity heats, as will Me Me Mia, who finished fourth tonight but had won her three previous WP starts for me,'' Smith said.

While Zipping Kyrgios' previous best WP time was 30.16, connections were not surprised he was able to post fast time on Saturday night.

"Before he even raced Zipping Kyrgios trialled 29.80 at WP,'' Melinda Finn, trainer John Finn's wife, said on Saturday.

"As a young dog he would begin fast and could clock first splits of around 5.40 at Wenty, but late last year he was in a race at Maitland and the boxes failed to open.

"When that happened Zipping Kyrgios hit the front of the boxes so hard he took a piece out of his head, and ever since then he has been a slow beginner.

"He got away a bit better tonight, around midfield, but showed good pace and a lot of tenacity to take that bump at the first turn and still win.

"We asked his owner John Finn the other day if he wanted us to put Zipping Kyrgios in the Derby and he said definitely.''

JODIE Lord, WP's most successful trainer in 2020, continued her blazing start to this year by landing a double with National Derby candidate Hooper, who won in 30.04, and Winlock On Top, who upset Wow's brother Ad Astra in 29.68, fastest time of the night.

Winlock On Top had been runner-up twice at WP before being skittled twice by wide runners when seventh at Wenty yesterday week.

But on Saturday night he "nailed'' the start and led all the way, comfortably holding off Ad Astra, who had been unbeaten in three previous WP starts.

Sierra Moon again showed her liking for box eight when she ran down the JODIE Lord-trained Spritley Ebony to win in 30.14.

Sierra Moon has now worn the pink vest eight times for six wins.

After the race Glen McKinley, whose partner Caroline Hughes trains Sierra Moon, said: "This greyhound was sidelined from March until November last night through a succession of injuries.

"Before she got hurt she was inclined to be not too strong at the end of 520m but these days Caroline works her a lot harder and that change in training has paid off because Sierra Moon now gets to the line powerfully.''
