Another Star In The Making

By Jeff Collerson
Biggest Star, a litter sister to the dashing but ill-fated front running star Fabulous Penny, continues to make an impact since leaving Victoria to join Charlie Gatt's Catherine Field kennels.

Biggest Star won over 400m at Bulli on December 22 in a scorching 22.19 and proved that win no fluke with a repeat performance at Nowra on Saturday, leading throughout over 365m in a flying 20.56.

That time was fastest of the four heats of the Bechini & Associates Sprint, and was .12sec quicker than the next best posted by CHRIS O'Brien powerful sprinter Steel Pulse.

"Biggest Star ran home in 11.96 which indicates she will run 520m,'' Charlie Gatt said.

"But before we worry about that she is engaged at Richmond over 400m on Wednesday and then has to contest the Bechini & Associates final at Nowra on Saturday.''

Meanwhile Fabulous Penny, who won 18 of 38 races including 280m wins at Wentworth Park in 16.11 (twice) and 16.05 and over 520m there in 30.19 and a slick 29.84, is set to become a mother.

Fabulous Penny's exciting career came to a crashing halt when she fell after being skittled while disputing the first turn lead at WP on August 26.

"She is in season and is to be mated with Barcia Bale,'' Gatt said.

Fabulous Penny and Biggest Star are daughters of Joe Baldacchino's marvellous producer Nosey Rozy, whose previous offspring included the Kel Greenough-trained Jimmy Newob, whose 22 wins from 48 appearances earned $239,000.

"He did a Bradbury,'' declared trainer George Borg after his dog Manderley scored the luckiest WP win of 2020 on Saturday night.

Manderley was a distant third on the home turn where pacemaking favourite Freakish Ethics was a clear leader from Sabata Raptor and looked all over a winner.

Unfortunately for trainer David Smith, Freakish Ethics dislocated a hock and as the dog was coming to a halt, Sabata Raptor veered out, slowed down and collided with him.

During that melee, Manderley, plugging determinedly along the rails, snatched victory in 30.42, by far the slowest time of the night.

George Borg's "Bradbury'' comment was a reference to the 2002 Winter Olympics at Salt Lake City, Utah, when Australia's Steven Bradbury won the 1000m Speed Skating gold medal after all his opponents were involved in a spectacular pile-up on the final corner.

Manderley owed Borg a favour as he had previously given the trainer plenty of headaches through his knack of being able to unlock his kennel gate and escape from his enclosure.

Queensland trainer Mal Cuneo and Shane Pulbrook, from Tahmoor in the NSW Southern Highlands, landed winning doubles among Saturday's seven heats of the time honoured Butch Monkley Memorial Maiden at Bbet Park Wauchope.

Just on 50 years ago Butch Monkley helped found the Wauchope track and the race named in his honour has long been part of the annual CHRIStmas/New Year carnival at the track.

On Saturday Cuneo won the Break And Enter, who covered the 384m in 21.84 and Peeper Jones, who clocked 21.94, while Pulbrook was successful with litter siblings Tara Swift and Hennessey, who each recorded 21.89.

Orange-based trainer Bob Littlefield's Sweet Maria shared fastest time of 21.84 with Break And Enter.

Bumpy Black, who contested last night's Woy Woy Poultry Gold Cup heats, was last year's Monkley Maiden winner, clocking fastest heat time of 21.88 before posting a blistering 21.55 in winning the final comfortably from Boom Foot.

Final of Saturday's Monkley Memorial will be held in conjunction with the Wauchope Cup on Wednesday, January 6.
