Blue Moss Joins Select Company

On Saturday night when Blue Moss joined the select group of maiden youngsters to break Wentworth Park's 30sec barrier trainer Glenn Summerfield was not in the least surprised.

Blue Moss made the pace when second to Road Spike in 30.09 in a Wentworth Park Maiden heat on December 9 but led all the way on Saturday, winning by a length from the consistent Super Estrella in 29.99.

"Since he has been in work Blue Moss has never run anything but fast trials,'' Summerfield, president of the Nowra club, said.

"I was given Blue Moss to train by my mate Steve Milligan, who late last year found he had too many dogs to train.

"He told me he had a couple of blue dogs by My Bro Fabio from Albatross Maid and I could choose between the quiet one and the fiery one.

"I picked the quiet one and that is Blue Moss, and while he is a lovely dog to handle he is all business as soon as he steps onto a racecourse.

"When he was a puppy and having his first hit-out at Nowra he ran the fastest time of 16 trials.

"But two trials later he fractured a metacarpal bone and all up he was sidelined for five months.

"I think he can only improve on those 29.99 figures because when he won on Saturday he was having just his sixth run from a set of starting boxes.

"Blue Moss had a post-to-post slip and a box-to-box trial at Wenty before the Maiden heats but he had not been over 520m so that's probably why he got a bit tired.

"I have not had many greyhounds good enough to bring to Wentworth Park over the past few years and before Blue Moss my previous city winner was Saigon Su, who won races over 520m at Wenty in July and August in 2012.

"Before Saigon Su I had success in the city a decade ago with Boom Gate, Art Of Desire and Regal Chloe.''

Boom Gate won eight races included a top grade 520m at Wentworth Park in January, 2009, while Regal Chloe and Art Of Desire won eight races apiece and were also good Wenty winners in 2010.

Stella Marina looked certain to be finished as a racing proposition when she was carried off the Wentworth Park track in July, 2019, but on Saturday at LADBROKES GARDENS defied the odds to score her fourth "comeback'' win.

On Saturday she won over 272m as a $19 outsider, a month after winning over the same course as the $26 longshot.

"Stella Marina won twice over 520m at Wentworth Park early in her career but suffered a bad wrist injury when she failed to finish in a race there in July last year,'' trainer Noelene Holloway said.

"I did not want to breed any more litters earlier this year so kept looking after her at home and after 10 months on the sidelines she was ready to make a comeback to racing.

"Although Stella Marina can run 520m I will restrict her to short course events from now on because she turns four early next year and has shown a lot of heart to come back and win races again.''
